Humpback whales can be clearly heard singing to each other underwater off the Queensland coast, and new research suggests they are learning complex tunes from other regions.
About 40,000 humpback whales migrate along Australia's eastern coastline each year.
According to Lady Elliot Island Reef Guide Jacinta Shackleton, hearing them is as simple as putting your head underwater.
"You can actually hear their song on the surface, and the deeper you go, the louder they get."
Their song changes every year, Research leader Jenny L. from the University of Queensland Jenny Allen discovered that neighboring populations of whales and whales were learning each other's unique tunes.
Dr Allen said: "The whales in eastern Australia sing a specific song pattern... and then the next year, whatever song eastern Australia sings, the whales in New Caledonia sing it. So, this one Songs are learned by one group of whales from another group of whales. "
