The blue-throated woodpecker is a kind of bird in the phylum Chordata, the order Avii, the order Pygniformes, the family Beldaeidae, and the genus Pygmys. The body length is 20-23 cm, and there are 3 subspecies in total. The forehead is vermilion, followed by golden yellow, with a blue or black horizontal band on the top of the head; the occiput is vermilion, the front of the head and the base of the lower mouth are also vermilion; there are also vermilion spots on both sides of the lower throat. . There is also a black vertical stripe on both sides of the red head; the eyebrow lines, sides of the head, chin and throat are bright copper-blue.

The Blue-throated Woodpecker mainly inhabits the evergreen broad-leaved forests in the middle and low mountains, hills, valleys and plains at the foot of mountains below 2000 meters above sea level. It also appears on the forest edges and on the trees beside the villages. Distributed in western, central, southern and southeastern Yunnan, as well as Guizhou and Guangxi.

Blue-throated Woodpeckers often move alone or in pairs. Occasionally they are seen in small groups looking for food together, especially in places where food is abundant.
