As we all know, the OLED trend in smartphones has become more and more obvious. According to data, the proportion of OLED screens in all smartphones is already as high as 50%. In the future, this proportion may increase to 70%, 80%, or even 100%.
Why do people use OLED screens? The reason is that OLED screens save more power than LCD screens and have better display effects. At the same time, they can be packaged using COF to achieve narrower borders, and can also be used for folding, curved screens, etc.
There are currently many manufacturers that provide OLED screens for smartphones, but the main ones are Samsung, BOOE, LG, Visionox and other manufacturers. Among them, Samsung is the best, accounting for almost 70%+ of the share in 2021.
Then there is BOE, with a market share of about 9%, and then LG, with a market share of about 7%. These three major manufacturers account for nearly 90% of the market, leaving little market for other manufacturers.
OLED screen requires OLED screen driver chip. The current process is mainly 28nm~45nm.
There are not many manufacturers that produce OLED screen driver chips for mobile phones. Currently, the global manufacturers that can produce OLED DDI are mainly TSMC, Samsung Electronics , UMC ( United Microelectronics ), American GlobalFoundries , and SMIC.
However, in terms of mobile phone OLED driver chips, there are three manufacturers, namely Samsung, LX Semicon, and Novatek.
According to data from the first quarter of 2022, Samsung accounts for 55% of mobile phone OLED screen driver chips, followed by LX Semicon, with a share of approximately 14.6%. Next is Novatek, with a share of 11.6%.
Why Samsung is so awesome is, of course, because Samsung itself and Apple both use Samsung's own OLED driver chips on a large scale. And LX Semicon is a subsidiary of LG, so it is also purchased in large quantities.
Novatek, many Chinese companies purchase OLED driver chips from Novatek.
As the proportion of OLED in smartphones becomes higher and higher, Samsung wants to expand the scale of its OLED screen driver chips and grab more of the market. It plans to cooperate with United Microelectronics to increase the production capacity of its own OLED driver chips.
I wonder what domestic manufacturers think about this? BOE is developing OLED screens, and other manufacturers have to keep up and develop OLED screen driver chips. Otherwise, even if the share of OLED screens increases, the driver chips will still be stuck in the hands of Korean manufacturers.
