Recently, Ericsson and MediaTek have deeply explored the potential of 5G with the purpose of improving user experience and set a milestone record - successfully completed carrier aggregation on millimeter waves, achieving an uplink rate of nearly 500Mb per second. That's twice the current upload rate and the fastest yet.
The demonstration took place in June this year, with Ericsson and MediaTek performing four-carrier (4CC) uplink aggregation on mmWave, achieving a peak rate of 495Mbps (425Mbps for NR plus 70Mbps for LTE). The demonstration used pre-commercial software on a device with the MediaTek M80 5G chipset inside. The lab test used Ericsson RAN Compute baseband 6648 and AIR 5331 millimeter wave wireless systems.
This test focuses on uplink carrier aggregation and is the first of its kind. The test demonstrates how the solution can help communications service providers deliver higher data rates and capacity for uplink applications such as user-initiated streaming (AR/VR) and content creation. With fast uplink performance, users don’t have to worry about weak signals during phone and video conferencing.

Before establishing this latest technology milestone, Ericsson demonstrated single-user multiple input multiple output (SU-MIMO) in April 2021. At that time, Ericsson achieved a single-user uplink data rate of 315Mbps, 15-20 times faster than today's typical uplink rates.
More technical details
Ericsson and MediaTek use a non-standalone architecture to aggregate four carriers of 100MHz each in the uplink (aggregating 8x100MHz in the downlink and 4x100MHz in the uplink). This aggregation in a lab environment achieved a rate of 495Mbps (425Mbps for 5G plus 70Mbps for 4G), which is twice the current uplink rate on the market.
This test used NR’s 39GHz spectrum (400MHz) and aggregated it with a single carrier of LTE’s 1900MHz spectrum (20MHz), then used the LTE and NR links to aggregate the entire bandwidth, ultimately achieving a total rate of nearly 500Mbps.
