Taiwan’s new military service plan was released on the 27th. The plan stipulates that starting from January 1, 2024, the service period of conscripts will be extended from the current four months to one year. Men of service age born after January 1, 2005 will enlist in the army in accordance with regulations. Recently, around the introduction of the plan, there has been a lot of discussion from all walks of life in Taiwan. Some young people think that extending the service period is a "waste of time." There are also young people who express their unwillingness to be cannon fodder for "Taiwan independence". Scholars on both sides of the Taiwan Strait point out that Tsai Ing-wen has vigorously promoted the strategy of "resisting China and protecting Taiwan" since she came to power. However, "resisting China" will not only fail to "protect Taiwan", but will also escalate the situation in the Taiwan Strait and push Taiwan to the brink of war. Now that the Taiwan authorities have extended military service, they are engaging in "arms expansion and preparation for war." However, no matter what tricks the Taiwan authorities play, "seeking independence through force" is a dead end.
According to Taiwan media reports, Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen held a press conference that afternoon to announce a plan to strengthen the military structure adjustment and declared that "this is an extremely difficult decision."
"United Daily News" published an editorial on the 27th, pointing out that today, the United States is leading the extension of military service and increasing arms purchases from Taiwan, which makes people feel that the United States is constantly extending its hands into Taiwan, and even turning Taiwan into a pawn in its struggle. Ironically, the DPP authorities also boast that this is the United States' "support for Taiwan." The editorial questioned that the Civil Machinery Party authorities are full of political calculations. How can people trust their children to hand over their children to such an authority?
In the street polls conducted by the media, Taiwanese young people said, "Assuming that those four months are wasteful, it is still wasteful if magnified to one year." "One year feels like a waste of time." Some Taiwanese people also left comments on social media, "In order to deceive votes so that young people do not have to serve in the military, the deception can no longer continue, and it will be extended again!" "Taiwan's military service system is really flexible, and politicians can tell the difference..." "Stop killing young people in Taiwan!"
A public opinion representative from the Kuomintang pointed out that the biggest problem with serving in the military is that many men of military age feel that being in the military is a waste of youth and life, and they have not learned relevant skills. There are also public opinion representatives from the Kuomintang criticizing the authorities for trying to solve the serious shortage of manpower in Taiwan's military by restoring one-year service when they are unable to solve Taiwan's declining birthrate. This may only be a short-term narcotic.
According to a report by Ta Kung Pao reporter Su Rongrong: Professor Li Fei, director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Studies Center of Xiamen University, told Ta Kung Pao that after Tsai Ing-wen came to power, she vigorously promoted the strategy of "resisting China and protecting Taiwan", in which "protecting Taiwan" is reflected in the purchase of large quantities of military weapons and the extension of military service to strengthen the military strength of Taiwan.
The mainland’s military power has an overwhelming advantage.
Li Fei said that the "Taiwan independence" forces and the "anti-China" forces in the United States believe that a conflict across the Taiwan Strait will occur sooner or later, so the United States has been urging the Tsai administration to extend the military service system to prepare for future conflicts across the Taiwan Strait. The United States has sinister intentions and wants to make the Chinese fight against the Chinese. However, judging from the comparison of cross-strait military strength, the mainland already has an overwhelming advantage over Taiwan. As the situation across the Taiwan Strait becomes tense, the pressure for military recruitment in Taiwan is increasing, and more and more young people in Taiwan are unwilling to serve as soldiers or cannon fodder.
On the island Chinese Culture University Associate Professor Liu Xingren said that Tsai Ing-wen’s decision to extend Taiwan’s military service to one year, improve benefits, and announce it in person was mainly due to pressure from the United States. The United States hopes that the Taiwan authorities can defend themselves and act as an "agent" of the United States in conflicts across the Taiwan Strait to confront mainland China and safeguard U.S. interests. This is really sad. Currently, cross-strait tensions are tense, and military service has been extended for one year, which will put tremendous physical and mental pressure on young people and parents in Taiwan.
Liu Xingren said that Taiwan is not a "sub-colony" of the United States, and Tsai Ing-wen should not become an accomplice of foreign forces, not hedging risks but actively increasing risks. Can extending military service for one year make it possible to fight against the mainland? Can increasing wages increase the willingness to serve in the military? How can the disaster of war befall Taiwan's young people? The Taiwanese people need to wake up and save themselves, fight against the wrong decisions of the Democratic Progressive Party, and use the power of public opinion to get Taiwan back on track.
