On December 29, local time, a fire broke out in a soundproof tunnel on the Second Gyeongin Expressway in Gwacheon City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. As of 21:00, the fire had caused 5 deaths and 37 injuries. The fire department reported earlier that day that six people died in the fire, but because one person was double counted, it was later revised to five deaths.

The fire department said that at around 13:50 that day, a truck caught fire for unknown reasons while passing through a soundproof tunnel. The fire quickly spread after spreading to the plastic soundproof tunnel, and eventually the hundreds of meters long soundproof tunnel was completely engulfed in flames. According to preliminary statistics from the South Korean fire department, a total of 45 cars were burned at the fire scene. The South Korean fire department sent 94 fire trucks, 219 firefighters and fire helicopters to the scene, and the fire was completely extinguished by around 16:12.

The Korean police and fire departments plan to determine the exact cause of the fire through joint on-site identification and investigation. (CCTV)
