The reporter learned that on the occasion of Tsinghua University's 110th anniversary exhibition next year (2021), a batch of advanced replicas of Tsinghua Slips will appear in the Tsinghua University History Museum.

Bamboo slips from the Warring States Period entered Tsinghua University's collection. More than ten years of "decoding" have yielded fruitful results.

In July 2008, nearly 2,500 precious bamboo slips from the Warring States Period donated by Tsinghua alumni were put into the Tsinghua Garden. They became known as "Tsinghua Slips".

At that time, experts determined that these Tsinghua bamboo slips were over 2,300 years old, with lengths ranging from 10 cm to 47.9 cm and an average thickness of only 1 mm. In order to better protect the bamboo slips, they were soaked in distilled water, with the side with the characters facing down and away from the light.

After identification, the characters on the bamboo slips were Chu characters from the Warring States Period, which have now been lost. Most of their contents are classics and histories that involve the core content of Chinese traditional culture. Most of them have never been seen in the pre-Qin bamboo slips that have been discovered, and they have extremely high academic value.

In August of that year, while carrying out the rescue cleaning and protection work of bamboo slips, Tsinghua University decided to establish the Unearthed Document Research and Protection Center to undertake the protection, arrangement and research of Tsinghua slips.

In 2018, Tsinghua bamboo slips have been in the collection of Tsinghua University for ten years. During this period, research results have been released one after another, which has enriched the system construction of ancient characters and ancient phonetics, enriched the academic world's understanding of ancient characters, the form of bamboo slips, and the circulation of ancient books. It has promoted the study of several major issues in pre-Qin history, such as the origin of the Qin people, the residences of the kings of Chu, the history of Zheng during the two-week period, and the history of Chu and Yue in the early Warring States, etc.

As of November 2020, with the efforts of the Tsinghua Jian research team, the Tsinghua Jian research results have been compiled into the tenth series, and each series contains important discoveries. The tenth series of

results contains eight articles in five categories All have never been seen before.

""The Bamboo Slips from the Warring States Period in the Collection of Tsinghua University (Collected)" contains a total of eight bamboo slips in five types, all of which have never been seen before..." At the press conference on November 20, Huang Dekuan, director of the Unearthed Documents Research and Protection Center of Tsinghua University, introduced that the eight bamboo slips are "Four Announcements" (four articles), "Four Seasons", "Si Sui", "Xingxing" and "Disease Prescription".

The most important of them is undoubtedly the "Four Announcements". There are fifty bamboo slips in the whole article, which are the farewells of Zhou Gongdan, Zhou Gong's son Boqin, Zhou Mu Wangman, and Zhao Bohu. There are four pieces in total.

"They are all prayers. There is a sentence in the familiar "Zuo Zhuan" that "the major affairs of the country are sacrifices to the soldiers." In the pre-Qin period, sacrifices were as important to the country as war. Therefore, the prayers during sacrifices will also be recorded as important documents." explained Cheng Hao, associate professor at the Center for Research and Protection of Unearthed Documents at Tsinghua University.

"The Four Notices involves important historical figures in the early Zhou Dynasty, and is quite valuable for the study of the history of the Western Zhou Dynasty and the formation of literary documents." Huang Dekuan said.

Among them, the first is a farewell message from Zhou Gong to Gao Tao; the second is a prayer for Boqin who first granted the title to Lu, praying for no faults and long-term protection of Lu Bang; the third is a prayer for King Mu of Zhou to regret his indulging in wandering in the fields and praying for peace of mind; the fourth is a prayer for summoning Bohu to pray for the disaster and eternal heir to the state because of the owl gathered in the temple of the ancestor.

In addition to the "Four Admonitions", the "Four Seasons", "Si Sui" and "Xingshen" are numerology-related documents; "Biying Prescription" is a prescription-technical document. Huang Dekuan pointed out that the "Four Seasons" involves very complex knowledge of astronomy, including the names of stars and records of their movements, which are all new and await further research by astronomical historians. The "Prescriptions for Diseases" contains three prescriptions for diseases, the first two of which are wine preparations, and the last one is a decoction. It is the earliest prescription document ever found. The compilation of

Tsinghua Simplified Chinese has entered a critical stage, and it is faced with the "hard nut to crack". The compilation of

Tsinghua Simplified Chinese has encountered many difficulties in each issue. Huang Dekuan pointed out that there were many difficulties encountered during the compilation of the tenth series. As far as writing is concerned, some very ancient words and usages are difficult issues; the content also covers a wide range of topics, including astronomy, calendar, and prescriptions in addition to historical content... "We sometimes felt at a loss during the process of sorting it out."

Huang Dekuan said that the "Four Admonitions" was originally planned to be released in the eighth series in 2018, but it felt immature at the time. "There are still many issues that have not been resolved, so I will put them aside." It took another three years to release it today. But despite this, there are still differences in everyone's understanding of many difficult words.

In Huang Dekuan's view, every piece of Tsinghua University's brief and thorough explanation requires hard work, and there are still many problems that cannot be solved immediately and require long-term research. Reporters from

learned that the current Tsinghua bamboo slip research and compilation team has gradually formed an academic echelon that combines old, middle-aged and young people. The collation work has been praised by the academic community and has also been valued by overseas sinology circles.

"It's hard to chew on the hard bones as you go to the back." At the press conference, Huang Dekuan said that Tsinghua's simplified compilation has entered a critical stage. The team will overcome difficulties, ensure the publication progress of one volume per year, and release this batch of important materials to the society and academic circles as soon as possible.

Regarding the desire of many traditional culture enthusiasts in society to see Tsinghua bamboo slips, Huang Dekuan responded, "Unfortunately, Tsinghua bamboo slips themselves are very fragile, and their protection requires a unique environment. As important national cultural relics, we cannot expose Tsinghua bamboo slips to unsuitable environments for viewing, so the original exhibits It cannot be achieved.”

Reporters learned that in order to make up for this regret, on the occasion of Tsinghua University’s 110th anniversary exhibition next year (2021), a batch of high-end replicas of the same size and lifelike quality as the original Tsinghua bamboo slips will appear in the Tsinghua University History Museum. At the same time, all original research reports on the Tsinghua bamboo slips will also be displayed.
