On the last day of October, PLA fighter jets rarely entered Taiwan's so-called "air defense identification zone" three times in one day. Some Taiwanese media claimed that mainland military aircraft were recorded entering the airspace of southwestern Taiwan for at least 25 days throughout October, and the Taiwan military conducted so-called "broadcast evacuation" more than 84 times, which were all new highs in a single month this year. In this regard, Taiwan media quoted military experts as saying that this phenomenon deserves close attention by the Taiwan military.
On the first day after November, mainland army aircraft flew to Taiwan's "Air Defense Identification Zone" as usual to check in. According to statistics from the Taiwan military in early October, mainland fighter jets crossed the so-called "central line of the strait" 49 times. In this regard, Yan Defa, head of Taiwan's defense department, said that the Taiwan Air Force's flight sorties and hours this year have increased by 20% compared with last year, resulting in increased tasks and increased pressure for Taiwan Air Force pilots.
In response, the spokesperson of the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command stated that Taiwan and its affiliated islands are a sacred and indivisible part of China's territory. The Chinese military's combat readiness patrol is completely reasonable and legal, and is a necessary action in response to the current tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the need to safeguard national sovereignty.
The United States' intervention in the situation in the Taiwan Strait has fueled the arrogance of the separatists on the island. At present, both the Democratic Progressive Party authorities and the Kuomintang, and even most of the people on the island who have been deceived by the illusion, believe that the United States is protecting the mainland and the mainland does not dare to attack Taiwan casually. Therefore, this self-deceptive view has formed a countercurrent on the island that threatens foreign countries and rejects reunification, and is pushing the situation in the Taiwan Strait to the brink of war.
If the other side of the Taiwan Strait still thinks that the mainland will not dare to take action against them due to the influence of the United States, and if they still think that Taiwan's purchase of more weapons from the United States can deter the mainland's determination to use force to unify Taiwan, then it is a big mistake. After all, once the mainland deems it necessary, no matter how many American weapons Taiwan possesses or what the attitude of the United States is, the mainland's pace of achieving national reunification cannot be stopped.
A few days ago, Taiwan's former deputy navy commander Ye Shiwen pointed out that the current situation in the Taiwan Strait is not a strategic issue, but a psychological issue. There is only whether the mainland wants to attack Taiwan, not whether it can. Therefore, if Taiwan wants to save its life, the only thing it can do is not to cause trouble. After all, if the mainland is forced to become intolerable and benevolence is exhausted, that will be the day when the separatist forces on the island are destroyed. No matter how many weapons the United States sells to Taiwan, it will not work.
As we all know, the United States supports Taiwan only out of the need to fight against China and make money by selling weapons. Although some American politicians clamor to "protect" Taiwan, the U.S. government has not made any commitments to Taiwan, and has not even signed a bilateral trade agreement with Taiwan that may trigger a war.
What's more, Trump , who is playing the Taiwan card, has a very low chance of winning in the general election on November 3. This will mean that the US policy towards Taiwan may undergo major changes with Biden coming to power. This result is undoubtedly a difficult issue for the Tsai administration.
After all, the current Democratic Progressive Party authorities can only survive by clinging to the thigh of the United States. Once the Tsai administration changes its Taiwan policy due to Biden's coming to power and loses the thigh of the United States, facing the increasing intensity of military pressure from the mainland, what will Taiwan do in the future? This question will probably keep the DPP guys awake all night.
At this point, giving in to the mainland to avoid further escalation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait seems to have become the only option for the Tsai administration. In this regard, Chen Yixin, director of the Institute of American Research at Tamkang University in Taiwan, believes that since the strategy of "the United States will not fight for Taiwan independence" is clear, the Tsai administration should not dare to take aggressive and provocative actions against the mainland in the future. After all, the DPP authorities are more afraid that the situation in the Taiwan Strait will get out of control, which is why they have recently stepped on the brakes on cross-strait issues.
According to Taiwan Strait website , on the 31st of last month, Tsai Ing-wen convened an interim "National Security Council". It can be seen from Tsai Ing-wen's post-event explanation that in addition to repeating the so-called cliché of "continuing to consolidate U.S.-Taiwan relations", this meeting also emphasized the need to "maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait and stabilize cross-strait relations."
At present, the People's Liberation Army's military deterrence against Taiwan has become the norm, and its determination to safeguard the integrity of national sovereignty has become increasingly firm. The Tsai authorities are obviously really afraid that the sword of mainland military rule will chop off their heads.
Regardless of whether the DPP authorities are really afraid or a delaying tactic, for Taiwan, there is only one choice: it must return to the framework of the 1992 Consensus and accept the vast space for cooperation provided by the mainland to achieve peaceful cross-strait reunification. Otherwise, Taiwan has no choice.
