National Climate Center shows that the La Niña event in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific has continued since October. In the public’s mind, La Niña is usually associated with cold winters. However, experts say that La Niña is only one factor affecting winter. According to predictions, the cold air process in my country this winter will be weaker than the same period in normal years.
A La Niña event refers to a cold water event in which sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean are abnormally cold. This event is the result of three La Niña events that have developed again since the equatorial central and eastern Pacific quickly turned colder in the spring of 2020. In the following three years, from the summer of 2020 to the spring of 2021, the autumn of 2021 to the early summer of 2022, and the autumn of 2022, it is therefore called a "triple" La Niña event.
Deputy Director of the National Climate Center Xiao Yu: La Niña is only one factor affecting winter, because the climate in winter is very complex. The polar regions, plateaus, and the natural variability within the atmosphere will have a certain impact on the winter climate. According to the latest forecast, we judge that overall this winter, the cold air process will be weaker than the same period in normal years.
Xiao Wei said that the meteorological department will strengthen its research and judgment on the uncertainty of the evolution of the climate system, and will continue to provide rolling monitoring forecast opinions and service information .
This winter our country will be warm at first and cold at the end.
Will this winter be a "cold winter"? Experts say that a "triple" La Niña is not a "triple" La Niña and therefore does not mean that climate impacts will double. In the context of global warming , even if a "triple" La Niña occurs, winter will not necessarily be particularly cold. The National Climate Center predicts that the temperature in most parts of my country this winter will be warmer or normal than the same period in normal years, with warm winters at first and cold winters at the end.
