In the past few days, the Armed Services Committees of the House and Senate of the U.S. Congress have successively passed the "National Defense Authorization Act for 2023", which has included the Taiwan authorities in the U.S. State Department's military financing plan to provide security assistance, including providing Taiwan with US$10 billion in "gratuitous assistance" over the next five years. However, the comprehensive appropriations bill subsequently negotiated by members of the two parties has considerable discrepancies in Taiwan-related issues. Finally, after the appropriation bill is voted on, it will be sent to Biden for signature.

However, what the "Taiwan independence" supporters on the island did not expect was that the authorization of the bill mentioned that Taiwan would be provided with up to US$2 billion in military financing per year, but it must be repaid, rather than free military aid, which is set to be repaid within 12 years. Previously, the Taiwanese media had hyped that the United States would provide a total of US$10 billion in military aid to Taiwan over five years, saying that the money would not need to be repaid, and talked a lot about Taiwan's so-called "major non-NATO ally treatment". They also said that such "treatment" in the world except for Israel and Taiwan. The result was a slap in the face.

US media reported that members of the Senate Appropriations Committee hope to provide loans to Taiwan to reduce the budget pressure on the State Council; members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Taiwan hope to obtain direct military assistance. Now the Taiwan authorities are also delaying the time and want to make Taiwan's military weapons and equipment stronger and stronger. However, when TSMC is removed by the United States, the Taiwan authorities will inevitably become "cannon fodder". Any attempt to interfere with China's reunification by providing military assistance to Taiwan in any way will fail.

It is obvious that the United States is now turning its back on Taiwan, and the Taiwan authorities have always had illusions about the United States. The plan of "relying on the United States to seek independence" has never stopped, but the United States does not think so. First of all, the United States no longer has that much money to provide "for free". The Senate Foreign Affairs and Appropriations Committees have fierce debates. In the end, most politicians are opposed to sending money to Taiwan. In the eyes of Americans, there are many places that need money more than Taiwan, such as Ukraine, so it is not Taiwan's turn to "eat the cake."

Secondly, if the United States really provides US$10 billion in military aid to Taiwan, and if a cross-strait conflict breaks out later, then the weapons provided by the United States are likely to be used by the People's Liberation Army. This is what the United States least wants to see, so the United States is not willing to provide it.

At the same time, the Taiwan authorities are becoming more and more anxious. Since the results of the "nine-in-one" election were released, it has been clearly felt that the Taiwanese people no longer believe in the political performances of the Democratic Progressive Party, but prefer to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and the Taiwan authorities have to respond.

The Democratic Progressive Party is expected to hold a meeting before the end of the year to decide whether to extend the service time of the "Taiwan Army" volunteers from four months to one year. From the perspective of Americans, whether this policy is advanced is also the key to examining whether the Tsai Ing-wen authorities are "determined to protect Taiwan" and whether the DPP really wants to "increase troops to protect Taiwan" or is it a political trick for votes.

However, the news has also aroused widespread opposition among young people on the island. Polls show that more than half of the people surveyed are unwilling to go to the battlefield, which shows that the DPP's attempt to "reject reunification with force" is unpopular.

Recently, Taiwanese media also announced a number of polls, including the results of cross-strait conflicts and whether the Democratic Progressive Party will step down in 2024. On the question of "whether you or your family are willing to go to the battlefield?" 53.6% of the respondents chose "unwilling"; on the question "If war really breaks out between the two sides, what will be the outcome?", 45.7% of the respondents chose "final agreement and peace talks", 13.1% chose "Mainland wins", and 10.3% chose "Taiwan wins."

In addition, 56% of the people surveyed believe that the DPP may "step down" in 2024. Judging from the above poll results, the DPP's main card of "resisting China and protecting Taiwan" has lost its effectiveness. Especially after the mainland's military exercises around the island in August, the people on the island have increasingly seen the consequences that colluding with the DPP and the United States may bring to Taiwan. Therefore, people on the island have changed their minds and have begun to support the cross-strait stance of "seeking peace and avoiding war."

Anyone who does unjust deeds will be killed. Although the DPP still has a lot of resources, it cannot bear the continued decline in support rates on the island, especially now that there are more and more voices calling on Su Zhenchang and others to step down. Big, these are concrete manifestations of the DPP's loss of power. Now the United States' attitude towards Taiwan has changed. "Rejecting reunification by force" is also a dead end. The two sides of the Taiwan Strait will surely be reunified. I advise the "Taiwan independence" elements on the island not to make the same mistakes again and again, otherwise they will be swept into the garbage heap of history.
