The first time I saw my compatriots in mainland China was in the scenic spot of , Southern California, in the United States. It was 1993 and my first time to go abroad. This adventure had a brief and restrained conversation. They were all civil servants who were sent out for inspection. The clothes were eye-catching. They wore shirts without tie, suit jackets and trousers, and were worn with sneakers. That was really not Chinese, Western, unofficial, and unrecreated. Let’s call it the national advanced version! At that time, it was only more than ten years since the mainland reform and opening up, so going abroad was not easy.
In 2009, I retired from public office and lived in Australia. My compatriots in mainland China can be seen everywhere. It was true that there were one time and another. Later, my son-in-law went on a business trip to Sydney , and the whole family also went for a tour. When I visited Sydney Opera House , I saw the squares and the squares were full of Chinese. I heard that my accents were all my compatriots! That was a rare shock. It was not the Palace Museum in Beijing, but the Sydney Opera House far away in the southern hemisphere. The meaning behind it was that China would become rich when it stood up, and it was no longer a turbulent era of poverty and backwardness.
In 2018, my husband and wife participated in the English conversation course at the Point Cook Community Centre in Melbourne. The class was 18 students, and we were from Taiwan. Yu and I were from the mainland. The clothes that were not Chinese, Western, unofficial, and casual are my old memories. I am confident that I can talk about some deep-seated topics. Everyone seems to be living a good life and not rich, but good with the strong halo of the country as the background.
The second outbound trip in 1995 was on the Jiangnan , which was once a geography textbook. The first night in Shanghai, the leader of the team led us to go shopping. As the street was booming, a pair of grandparents in fur clothes followed him to ask for money. Seeing that they were about to pass the intersection, no one paid attention to them. Grandpa and grandma used an urgent move to shoot the "Little Red Man" national curse. Others were stunned when they heard it, but I felt a warm feeling flowed into my stomach. It was the local accent, the fragment of childhood life, and the names that the old lady called us little kids when she was in the village when she was a child. It was so kind!
Today, the mainland has made progress in all aspects. Last spring, visiting Xiamen, Fujian, is admirable in terms of the city appearance and people's literacy. It is enough to be included in the livable city. We live a good life in life, and we hope that all mankind will live a good life. China's entry into a powerful country is the ardent expectation of 1.4 billion people, so why are others reluctant to give blessings!
