According to Taiwan's "China Times News Network", in response to the PLA's continuous exercises in the sea and airspace around Taiwan, the Taiwan Air Force stationed at Hualien Base dispatched 6 F-16V fighter jets last night (17th) to carry live ammunition for emergency interception training. Taiwanese media said that the Taiwan Air Force F-16V fighter was just launched in November last year and is currently the most advanced fighter installed by the Taiwan military. These fighters can carry advanced air-to-air missile and "harpoon" anti-ship missiles to perform air combat and anti-ship combat tasks.
However, when Taiwan media introduced the F-16V fighter, they did not forget to introduce the most advanced J-20 stealth fighter installed by the People's Liberation Army, pointing out that the maximum speed of Taiwan's F-16V fighter can reach 2414 kilometers per hour, while the fastest J-20 fighter can only fly 2126 kilometers; in addition, the maximum range of the F-16V fighter can reach 3222 kilometers, and the much larger J-20 can only fly 3222 kilometers; in terms of maneuverability, the length of the F-16V is only 14.8 meters and 4.8 meters high, while the length of the J-20 reaches 20.4 meters, which means that the J-20 fighter is quite bulky and its maneuverability is not as good as that of the F-16V fighter. This shows that some media on the island still confidently believe that the F-16V fighter aircraft equipped by the Taiwan military can defeat the J-20 fighter jets of the People's Liberation Army. However, without other favorable evidence, they can only use speed and maneuverability to speak out.
According to the situation reported by Taiwan media, the Taiwan military dispatched the F-16V fighter jets stationed in Hualien base in eastern Taiwan at night, from which we can get two facts.
First of all, PLA Air Force fighters not only cross the so-called "middle line of the strait", overlooking the Vale on the west coast of Taiwan and Penghu Islands . Taiwan's eastern airspace has also become the target of "care" of PLA Air Force fighters. Otherwise, the air force on the other side would not let the F-16V fighter jets at the Hualien base practice emergency airlift interception mission.
Secondly, the PLA Air Force fighter jets have conducted combat readiness cruises in the airspace around Taiwan all day and night. In addition to dispatching a large number of J-11, J-16 and Su-30 fighter jets to approach Taiwan, they do not stop at night, and the normalization of exercises and training with Taiwan has entered the all-weather stage. In this way, in addition to accelerating the lifespan of fighter jets such as the old Phantom-2000 and IDF on the other side, it will also make the pilots on the other side exhausted and eventually collapse.
With such high intensity approaching deterrence, Taiwan can only slowly accept the reality. This situation has become the norm. Taiwan’s so-called concepts of “middle line of the strait,” “territorial waters” and “airspace” no longer exist.
As for the statement that the F-16V fighter jet is better than the J-20 fighter jet in terms of speed and maneuverability, it is actually "beggar and Dragon King compete with treasure."
According to public data, the maximum flight speed of the F-16 fighter is Mach 2, which is 2448 kilometers per hour, which is basically consistent with what Taiwan media said. As for the maximum flight speed of the J-20 fighter that Taiwan media said is 2126 kilometers, which is the maximum flight speed of Mach 1.7, this is obviously inconsistent with the facts. As early as 2018, the "Soldier One Minute" micro video launched by People's Daily disclosed a set of flight data of the J-20 fighter, pointing out that the J-20 fighter can fight 52 kilometers in one minute. means that the flight speed of the J-20 fighter can reach 3121 kilometers per hour, which is equivalent to Mach 2.55, which exceeds Mach 2.35 Su-27 and Mach 2.5 F-15, and is already the fastest-flying fifth-generation fighter in the world.
From the perspective of maneuverability, the J-20 adopts a close-coupled tailless delta wing duck-type layout, and cooperates with the large edge strip wing and full-move vertical tail design, directly using the multi-vortex system vortex lift aerodynamic layout . This design scheme has the characteristics of large lift coefficient, small resistance of supersonic , small center of gravity change range, good large angle of attack performance, high agility, and has a lift coefficient of more than 2.0, making it the most lift efficiency of the world. In addition, the J-20 fighter is equipped with two WS-10C engines with a thrust of 14.5 tons, which has the power of Pengbai. Its comprehensive maneuverability is far better than the J-10 fighter, and it is not a bulky fighter as Taiwanese media said.Although the F-16 fighter jet has excellent maneuverability and the instantaneous hovering angular velocity is relatively large, it has no advantage in maneuverability when facing the J-20 with an unconventional aerodynamic layout.
In fact, Taiwan's F-16V fighter is upgraded from the old F-16A/B fighter. The most important improvement is that it has replaced the AN/APG-83 variable agile beam active phased array radar (SABR). The radar can perform air-to-air and air-to-ground mode tasks at the same time, or interlaced to scan both these two modes, and can scan all targets from the ground to the air at the same time. The detection capability has greatly improved the processing capability of a multi-target. In addition, the F-16V has also been equipped with a new generation of modular central computers, a new glass cockpit, a Link-16 communication system, an enemy-friendly identification system, , an automatic collision avoidance system (Auto-GCAS), an optoelectronic pod, a JHMCS helmet display and other systems. So no matter how the F-16V is changed, it is always the foundation of a fourth-generation aircraft. At best, it is a fourth-generation and a half-generation fighter, and its comprehensive performance can only be compared with the J-10C fighter equipped by the People's Liberation Army.
F-16V upgrade details
It should be pointed out that the F-16A/B fighter aircraft equipped by the Taiwan military cannot install a special radar cooling system like the F-16E/F. Therefore, in order to control the heat generation of the radar, the number of T/R components of the AN/APG-83 radar can only be reduced and the radar power is limited. In this way, the Taiwan F-16V can only be a fourth-generation and a half-generation fighter equipped with castrated version of active phased array radar.
Compared with the F-16V fighter, the radar reflection area of the J-20 fighter fuselage (RCS) value is two orders of magnitude lower, and is equipped with a large-diameter active phased array radar with a maximum detection distance of up to 400 kilometers. It also assists with photoelectric detection systems, stealth capabilities and situational awareness capabilities far above the F-16V. In addition, the Pili-15 and Pili-10 air-to-air missiles equipped by the J-20 are also much more advanced than the AIM-120C and AIM-9X air-to-air missiles equipped by the F-16V. They can crush the F-16V fighter jets in both over-visual air combat and close-range combat.
Finally, the F-16V may not even have the chance to fight the J-20. Under the fire assault of the PLA's first wave of ballistic missiles , cruise missile and long-range rocket launcher, all military airport in Taiwan will not survive, and the F-16V fighter may not even have the chance to take off, and can only become cannon fodder on the onboard runway.
