Taiwan today reported 44,846 new local confirmed cases of COVID-19, an increase of 3,482 cases from last week, an increase of 8.4%. There were 38 new cases of immigration from abroad and 33 deaths. Zhuang Renxiang, spokesperson of the Taiwan Epidemic "Command Center", said that because there were three consecutive days of holidays last week, the highest number of confirmed cases last week occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, rather than on the usual Tuesday and Wednesday, so on average, it fell by 4.3%.
"Construction Center" stated that today's 44,846 new local cases were 20,919 males, 23,908 females, and 19 cases, ages between under 5 and over 90 years old, and the number of cases was New Taipei City (7,920 cases), Taichung City (5,835 cases), Kaohsiung City (5,375 cases), Taipei City (4,504 cases), Tainan City (3,902 cases), Taoyuan City (3,893 cases), Changhua County (2587 cases), Pingtung County (1551 cases), Yunlin County (1163 cases), Hsinchu County (1036 cases), Miaoli County (996 cases), Chiayi County (972 cases), Yilan County (861 cases), Nantou County (849 cases), Hsinchu City (836 cases), Chiayi City (671 cases), Keelung City (633 cases), Hualien County (587 cases), Taitung County (320 cases), Kinmen County (185 cases), Penghu County (141 cases), Mazu (29 cases).
Taiwan added 28,806 new local cases yesterday. Zhou Zhihao, head of the epidemic monitoring team of the "Command Center", said that it decreased by 10.2% from last Monday, but it is still in the plateau period. Some experts estimate that the number of new cases in a single day can drop below 10,000 from November 21, but Wang Bisheng, the commander of the command center, said: "I don't have such a certainty, and I'm happy if it is."
The current epidemic in Taiwan is mainly BA.5 mutant strains. The "Command Center" randomly inspected 41 local virus strains last week, with only one case being BA.2, and 40 BA.5 cases, accounting for 98%.
However, three emerging variants have appeared in Taiwan one after another. Luo Yijun, deputy head of the Medical Resilience Group, said that a case of BF.7 entering the United States was detected at the airport last week, with a total of four cases; in addition, two cases were detected in September, BQ.1.1 and one case of XBB. Fortunately, all of them are cases of immigration from abroad.
Luo Yijun said that these three new variants have three major characteristics: increased transmission power, decreased vaccine protection due to immune escape, and the possibility that a single antibody may need to be updated to respond.
Luo Yijun said that the next mainstream strain on the island is still difficult to predict, and it is necessary to monitor continuously and observe the detection of local cases. "The best way to prevent it is to get vaccinated." Luo Yijun said that the next-generation vaccine is designed for the Omickron variant strain, and these three new variant strains belong to the Omickron branch, so vaccination with the next-generation vaccine will help enhance immunity, prevent infection and severe illness.
Taiwan has launched Moderna's next-generation vaccine, with a total of 783,015 people vaccinated, but the latest adverse events after vaccination information shows that a new case of death after receiving Moderna's next-generation bivalent vaccine was added, a 92-year-old woman died seven days after vaccination, and now four suspected deaths have accumulated. Zhuang Renxiang, spokesman of the "Command Center", said that the case is under judicial verification and the causal relationship is to be clarified. (Editor: Fang Yanyan)
