Taiwan today reported 44,846 new local confirmed cases of COVID-19, an increase of 3,482 cases from last week, an increase of 8.4%. There were 38 new cases of immigration from abroad and 33 deaths. Taiwan added 28,806 new local cases yesterday. The current epidemic in Taiwan is mainly BA.5 mutant strains. The "Command Center" randomly inspected 41 local virus strains last week, with only one case being BA.2, and 40 BA.5 cases, accounting for 98%.
However, three emerging variants have appeared in Taiwan one after another. Luo Yijun, deputy head of the Medical Resilience Group, said that a case of BF.7 entering the United States was detected at the airport last week, with a total of four cases; in addition, two cases were detected in September, BQ.1.1 and one case of XBB. Fortunately, all of them are cases of immigration from abroad.
Luo Yijun said that these three new variants have three major characteristics: increased transmission power, decreased vaccine protection due to immune escape, and the possibility that a single antibody may need to be updated to respond.
Luo Yijun said that the next mainstream strain on the island is still difficult to predict, and it is necessary to monitor continuously and observe the detection of local cases. "The best way to prevent it is to get vaccinated." Luo Yijun said that the next-generation vaccine is designed for the Omickron variant strain, and these three new variant strains belong to the Omickron branch, so vaccination with the next-generation vaccine will help enhance immunity, prevent infection and severe illness.
