According to the latest data from shipping consulting agency Alphaliner, as of May 9, 2022, Evergreen Shipping's total capacity reached 1,509,654 TEU, accounting for 5.9% of the global capacity, surpassing ONE, Japan's largest liner operator, and rising to sixth place in the world.
Alphaliner data shows that Evergreen Marine currently operates a total of 201 ships, including 122 owned ships and 79 chartered ships. In addition, it has 65 new shipbuilding orders, with a total capacity of 627,196 TEU. With the delivery of new ships this year, Evergreen's overall capacity will continue to rise, and is expected to grow by 15% to 20% by the end of the year.
According to statistics, Evergreen Shipping will deliver new shipping capacity this year ranks among the top few of shipping companies. In 2022, the global newly delivered container ship capacity will be approximately 950,000 TEU, while Evergreen expects the new capacity to reach 193,400 TEU this year, accounting for 20.4%.
After the delivery of new capacity this year, EVA's total capacity will reach 1.7 million TEU, further widening the capacity gap with ONE and will be close to the fifth-ranked Hapag-Lloyd.
As new ships continue to join, Evergreen will continue to enhance its global competitiveness. It is reported that 80% of Evergreen's ships are less than ten years old, and most of them meet emission regulations. In addition, Evergreen's performance hit a new high in the first quarter of this year. On May 6, Evergreen released its first quarter financial report, with consolidated revenue reaching NT$170.824 billion (approximately US$5.736 billion), and after-tax profit reaching NT$101.359 billion (approximately US$3.404 billion), exceeding NT$100 billion for the first time.
Regarding the outlook for this year's shipping market, Xie Huiquan, general manager of Evergreen, pointed out that the annual freight rate is small and it is not easy to look at the shipping market optimistically. Chairman Evergreen also said that the shipping prosperity this year is OK. It is reported that the long contract of Evergreen Line will take effect from May, and the freight rate of new contracts will double compared with last year. At the same time, new ships will be delivered in the second half of the year, which can supplement market capacity and performance will continue to improve.
