Swedish artist Youlisi has been engaged in the art of paper for more than 30 years. "Paper was created in China more than two thousand years ago and has become the most common thing in daily life. I think paper art is a very special art form and can be made by hand. I have put a lot of thought on it and slowly got to the present." She said that she only uses water and paper to make all her works, without any additives such as glue, and just wants to present the most natural appearance of paper.

Youlisi went to Xiamen for the first time last year and was invited to participate in the first art Xiamen exhibition. She was impressed by Xiamen and her works that participated in the exhibition were also well received. After being invited by the curator this time, she went to the studio to select works. "I am very interested in the ancient civilization of China. This time it is in the old house, which is even more exciting. I hope to make the environment of the old house a good combination with paper works. I taught in Inner Mongolia for a while before, and this time my students also brought their works to the exhibition."

Although it uses European materials or techniques, it is deeply influenced by Chinese civilization. Many of its works are inspired by Chinese stories, music, or the discovery of visiting an old Chinese building. Many of her experiences in China inspired her, allowing her to apply various experiences and turn them into some elements into works that are made into paper. She was very happy to see that the most common but not noticeable paper in daily life can make different appearances and become real works of art, not just a medium of daily life.

Youlisi always learns new ways from different attempts. When she taught students in the Hohhot studio in Inner Mongolia, she made paper works by herself, using a very traditional European method, with a very thin net on the picture frame and made a sieve. This method is very convenient. But the students there couldn't get so much material, so they just put it on the window. She found that this was another method, which was a very good attempt. After she returned, she also made some works in this new way.

Youlisi said that there are many machines and technologies that can produce paper now, but when we return to the most primitive method, we will experience the beauty of it. "Although the times are progressing, there are some traditional things that cannot be forgotten. This is why I don't want to give up, but I still have to continue to make paper and adhere to traditional concepts. Art is also eternal. I want to use art as a carrier to bring the concept of traditional paper back to modern life."

This time, Youlisi will teach the experiencers a complete set of processes, allowing them to try to make paper works with simple materials, including from selecting materials, participating in the production to finally drying.She specially brought a device from abroad that could pulp all things with fibers, such as cloth, and then use a homemade sieve to make paper, pick up the pulp evenly, spread it onto the felt, and dry it into shape. On this basis, you can design in your own way, freely grasp the thickness of the paper, make it into any shape such as circles, triangles, etc., and add other materials to match it with different colors. She said: "During the production process, you may have new ideas and insights, and you will get a lot of inspiration. It is a very happy thing to see that the paper that you usually think is very simple becomes wonderful."

Youlisi said that there is still a lot of room for extension in the use of paper. She hopes that paper can enter the world of art as a new material, giving people more new feelings and ideas. "The most fundamental reason why I want to carry forward the art of paper to China is that I hope the concept of 'reusing' can be better developed and developed in China."
