Since obtaining the various long-range strike weapons provided by NATO , Ukraine has vowed to launch attacks on Russian targets more than once. The name was directly included Krasnodar connecting the Taman Peninsula of Russia to Krasnodar in Crimea in Krch Strait Bridge . According to Global Network report, Ukrainian National Security and National Defense Commission secretary Danilov said that the Ukrainian army does not rule out that it will use long-range weapons to destroy the "illegal buildings" built by Russia in Kerch Strait .
The "illegal building" that Danilov mentioned to be demolished refers to the Kerch Strait Bridge in Crimean Peninsula . This is a cross-sea bridge with highway and railway lines. The total length is 19 kilometers and the sea-crossing part is 7.5 kilometers. It is currently the longest bridge in Europe, spanning the Kerch Strait and connecting the Crimean Peninsula and the Okrasnodar Krai. The Kerch Strait Bridge is an absolute thorn in the eye and thorn in the flesh for Ukrainians.
Kerch Strait is located between the Crimean Peninsula and the Taman Peninsula in western Russia. It is the only channel connecting Azov Sea and Black Sea and has a very important strategic position. In 2014, after the North of the Crimean Peninsula was incorporated into Russia, Russia gained control of the Strait of Kerch, and also controlled the right of way for Ukrainian port cities from the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea, and to the Mediterranean .
Subsequently, Russian President Putin proposed to build a bridge across the Kerch Strait. In June 2014, the Russian Expressway State Company announced that it would complete the construction of the Kerch Strait Bridge within three and a half years. Construction of the bridge began in May 2015. On May 16, 2018, the Kerch Strait Bridge was completed and opened to traffic. Emperor Putin personally drove a Kamas truck and led a convoy of 30 trucks to pass the bridge. In this way, the Crimean Peninsula is closely linked to Russia's territory.
The main function of this bridge is not to conduct highway and railway transportation, but to cut off the estuary of the Kechi Strait. It has the same function as the Russian-Korea Railway Bridge built by Russia at the mouth of the Tumen River in my country. Since the bridge is very low, China has the right to go to the sea, and it can only pass small fishing boats below 300 tons. The same is true for the Kerch Strait Bridge, Russians are the best at doing this. The bridge has 4 road driving lines and two railway lines. The bridge in the main channel area is 35 meters away from the sea level. This height basically eliminates the possibility of large foreign ships entering the Azov Sea, but can ensure the passage of small and medium-sized civilian ships commonly used in Russia. After Russia controls the Kerch Strait Bridge, it is equivalent to closing the Kerch Strait. The entire eastern Ukraine estuary, as well as the military base and commercial terminals deployed by Ukraine on the coast of the Azov Sea will be under Russia's control.
After withdrawing from Snake Island , Russia felt a sense of crisis. Recently, Russian troops stationed in Crimea began to carry out exercises to protect the Kerch Bridge, and implemented protection of the bridge through a variety of measures, including releasing smoke and hiding the bridge with smoke. If it is a weapon for optical image guidance and laser guidance, smoke can indeed effectively mask and counter.
In order to defend against possible Ukrainian attacks, the Russian army significantly strengthened its defense against Crimea Bridge . Not long ago, the Russian army installed angle reflector on two flat-bottom barges, and dragged it near the Kerch Bridge as a means of defense against radar . If the incoming missile uses radar end guidance, then the angle reflector can effectively trick the missile.
In fact, bridges are the most difficult target to successfully bomb. Since World War II , it has been a headache for air forces in various countries. The same is true for the US military. Long-range fire strikes a bridge, which is very difficult, must aim at weaknesses in the bridge with high accuracy, and may require a large amount of fire to cause serious damage to the bridge.
Bombing a bridge requires a very precise hit to the bearing point. In the past, using bomber and attack aircraft to throw ordinary bombs bombs to blow up the bridge was simply a difficult task than climbing the sky. Resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea and Vietnam War , if the US military wants to collapse an important bridge, it needs thousands of bombings.
With missiles and precision guided weapons , it is not easy to blow up the bridge. Because the accuracy of about CEP=10 meters of tactical ballistic missiles and satellite guided bombs is not enough to hit the target with one blow. The ideal ammunition to strike bridges is actually the laser guided bomb , because among all the precision guided ammunitions, the end accuracy of laser guided bombs is the highest, and can reach the level of CEP=1~2 meters. But laser-guided bombs need attack aircraft to throw them.
Currently, the Ukrainian army does not have many weapons that can strike at a long range. Moreover, the range is not enough to attack the Kerch Bridge 300 kilometers away.
For example, TB-2 drone has a control radius of only 150 kilometers. Haimas rocket launcher 's M30 guided rocket range is only 70 kilometers. The Dot-U short-range ballistic missile has a range of only 120 kilometers and is not suitable for attacking slender targets such as maritime bridges. The range of shore missiles such as Neptune and Harpoon is less than 300 kilometers.
Only the combat radius of the Ukrainian Air Force's Su-25 attack aircraft can cover the Kerch Bridge, but the attack aircraft has extremely low survivability. Or sending naval boats to commit suicide attacks, the success rate of these methods is not high.
If the United States supports some ATACMS improved Army tactical missiles with a range of 300 kilometers in Ukraine, this missile is equipped with a precisely guided 220 kg single warhead, which directly uses the semi-armor-piercing warhead of the Harpoon anti-ship missile, and is equipped with intelligent penetration/air explosion fuses, which can be used to strike hard targets. Only this kind of missile with a terminal accuracy of 10 meters with a satellite guided poses a great threat to the Kerch Bridge.
Therefore, Ukraine lacks the means to effectively combat the Kerch Bridge, and it does not actually have the ability to destroy the Crimean Bridge, which is generally safe. Even if Ukraine has this ability and destroys the bridge, Ukraine will face fierce retaliation from Russia.
