Korea Defense Procurement Plan Administration (DAPA) issued a tender for the design of ASCHEN ships, recruiting various Korean shipbuilding companies to design a local ASCHEN destroyer, called the KDDX plan, with an estimated displacement of 6,000 tons.
Although South Korean Navy currently has three "Sejong-class" based on the US military Burke class (Arleigh Burke class), the number is not enough, so Seoul proposed a self-designed 6,000-ton ASCH destroyer to expand its fleet strength. Currently, the two largest shipbuilders in South Korea: Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine Engineering (DSME), and Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI), have competed with the design deadline in 2023, while the construction deadline is 2024.
Daewoo Shipbuilding proposed destroyer shape
Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine Engineering (DSME) once showed their future warship design inside at the 2019 Maritime Equipment Exhibition. It is a destroyer with a length of 155 meters, 18 meters, draft of 9.5 meters, and displacement of 8,000 tons. The tower mast is integrated with the radar system. The armed forces have 64 vertical launch units and 16 anti-ship missiles.
As for Hyundai Heavy Industry, the destroyer concept they proposed has a unique wave-like bow.
Last week, the South Korean Defense Procurement Program Administration just approved a $283.5 million plan to develop a homegrown near-force weapons system (CIWS), which is also associated with the KDDX destroyer R&D.
Aegis ship: Arleigh Burke-class destroyer
In March 2020, General Electric and Hanwha Aerospace signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), mainly to cooperate in the development of new power propulsion systems. No matter which company KDDX wins the future, the power part has already been settled.
