One
Why study finance?
01
What is finance?
The finance major is differentiated from economics, taking the economic activities of integrating currency and monetary funds as the research object. Specifically, theories and practices of non-bank financial institutions such as banks and securities and insurance, theories and practices of money market, capital market and international financial markets, theories and practices of financial macro-control and the entire financial economy, as well as theories and practices of financial management, especially financial risk management.
02
Employment advantages in finance
The employment prospects are very broad, and employment directions include: commercial banks, investment and investment banks, consulting companies, fund companies, securities companies and other industries, and popular positions
High salary: In the horizontal comparison of salary in various industries, the average salary and benefits of the financial industry are the highest. The monthly salary of financial talents is as low as 8,000 yuan and as high as 50,000 yuan. 03
Main employment fields and positions in finance
Whether you are a bachelor's degree or a master's degree, the overall employment directions of graduates of finance major include economic analysis and prediction, foreign trade, marketing, management, etc.; if you can obtain some qualification certification, the employment range will be wider, the employment level will be higher, and the treatment will be better, such as franchised financial analyst (CFA), franchised wealth manager (CWM), fund manager, securities broker, securities analyst, etc.
The demand for employment talents in master's degree in finance is mainly concentrated in high-end markets, such as university teachers, fund companies, investment banks, securities companies, insurance companies, trust investment companies, etc.
The following will introduce in detail the popular employment fields, positions, and their development prospects in finance.
2
Popular financial employment fields and development plans
The employment scope of financial talents is broad, mainly concentrated in investment banks, commercial banks, consulting companies, fund companies, securities companies, etc. Next, we will introduce them one by one.
01
Investment banking
The entry threshold for investment banking is very high. In addition to basic professional skills, talent recruitment in this type of direction also has high requirements for professional skills and cultural dimensions, including communication skills, teamwork, project management, etc. In addition, having an international perspective is also one of the qualities they value.
The IBD department of the investment bank is the department that most financial graduates want to go to, and the most traditional investment banking department does only one thing: it is to help customers raise funds. There are generally three financing channels: issuance of shares, issuance of bonds and M&A. The way investment banks make money is to collect commissions to help customers raise funds, which are generally charged based on the financing scale multiplied by one percentage.
The promotion route of IBD is usually: 2-3 years of analyst (Analyst) → 2-3 years of assistant (Associate) → several years of vice president (Vice President) → several years of executive director (Executive Director) → Managing Director (Managing Director).
Generally speaking, many people who have been an analyst for three years will choose to study MBA, and most of the people who jump out of IBD are VC/PE.
02
Bank
Bank is one of the main choices for graduates from finance majors, mainly because banks have stable income, lighter pressure and higher welfare levels.
The positions for financial graduates are mainly divided into two categories: basic service categories such as customer service, and professional positions such as financial research. Graduates should first make this kind of basic professional reserve, and most of them need to rotate and accumulate experience. The promotion path is as follows:
A teller who has worked for 3-5 years usually transfers to the position of account manager and lobby manager. However, it is difficult to promote the lobby manager again, and usually you still need to transfer to an account manager. Account managers usually need to have their own core clients.
Generally, the deposit of the account manager is stable at more than 50 million yuan, and his working years are more than 3 years. He will be included in the reserve talent pool and will be promoted to business manager in one year; if the deposit is stable at 100 million yuan, he will be promoted to the assistant general manager of the department, and he will enter the middle-level cadre sequence with an annual income of about 600,000 yuan.
Of course, there are also account managers who are converted to risk managers and then promoted to credit review. They are taking the "approval" path, specializing in economics, industries, financial accounting knowledge, regulations and policies, and non-performing loans.
Many account managers are also poached by banks, private equity or other partners during their work because of their abilities, their work or their mastery of certain resources. This situation is actually very common. The key is that they need to have the highlights that others value.
03
Trust and securities
Trust and securities have relatively high thresholds, and they generally prefer experienced job seekers, but some companies will also open a certain number of recruitment places for fresh graduates every year. Trust personnel generally start with assistants when entering the industry, and then be promoted according to the path of trust managers and senior trust managers. Then they may reach the director level and be responsible for business work.
Of course, there are two promotion paths from the front-end and back-end positions. The front desk is actually the promotion path for most job seekers who want to work in the securities industry: Relationship Manager → Senior Account Manager → Regional Manager → Marketing Director → General Manager of Sales Department.
The backend includes investment consulting, customer service, counter, risk control, administration, etc. Securities qualifications are required. The general career path is: Clerk → Department Manager → Director → General Manager of Sales Department.
04
Fund venture capital
Relatively speaking, fund venture capital companies pay more attention to comprehensive qualities and practical experience, so there are fewer recruitment for fresh graduates.
The fund venture capital industry has a feature: it requires a very strong understanding and learning ability of technology, business models, and business logic. Therefore, when recruiting fresh graduates, most fund venture capital companies hope that job seekers will have a background in science and engineering during their undergraduate studies. Because this industry has high requirements for comprehensive literacy and it takes too much time to train a college graduate, it generally only recruits few fresh graduates every year, and their job development path is the same as investment banks.
In the fund circle, the most mainstream executive promotion path for PE/VC funds in the primary market is: Analyst → Investment Manager/Associate → Vice President → Director → Managing Director → Partner → Managing Partner (Managing Partner)
05
Insurance industry
After the finance graduates gradually cultivated their experience in insurance marketing and risk management in the insurance industry, their career development space is still very large. Although the salary returns in the insurance industry may not be as high as those in investment banks, it is relatively stable and has a lot of room for development, which is also an excellent choice for girls who need to assume more family responsibilities. Therefore, friends who want to get a solid return may wish to consider the insurance industry as an option.
Representative enterprises: French AXA (AXA), German Allianz Group (Allianz), Dutch International Group (INGGroup), American International Group (AIG), Zhongli Insurance Company (AssicurazioniGenerali), etc.
06
Consultation industry
The consulting industry mainly refers to IT consulting, strategic consulting, marketing consulting, auditing, listing guidance, etc. Large multinational consulting companies include: Bo , Accenture , McKinsey, Boston, Bain, Cegee , Rolland Berger , Kelny , Morit, Deloitte, Boss, PwC , etc. The well-known local consulting companies include: Hejun Consulting, Xinhuaxin, Yuanzhuo, Hamp, Huaxia cornerstone , etc.
07
Regulatory department
Working to the regulatory department is also very suitable for postgraduate students in finance. First of all, finance is based on macroeconomics, based on macro-control of the financial market, professional applications are easier to start, and policy grasp is relatively in place; secondly, after three or five years of re-entering in the industry management department, you can at least get middle-level or above positions in the middle-level and above. The limitation is that it is difficult to enter these industries and may also require background support. It is difficult for undergraduates to enter unless they are indeed very good. Representative industries: relevant government departments
Three
Analysis of popular financial positions
01
01
Bank customer service
For graduates, the basic service work of banks is still the main delivery direction, and the number of recruitment is more than 10,000 yuan per year. The work content is mainly personal business and corporate business, and the work intensity is relatively high.
The threshold for this position is low, and most of them only need to graduate from undergraduate studies. At the same time, the incremental demand in first-tier cities has decreased, and more demands are distributed in small and medium-sized cities.
02
Account Manager
There is a high demand for financial talents in securities, banks, trusts and other institutions, and the corresponding positions are brokerage brokers, account managers, and trust managers. This type of position requires the ability to maintain customer relationships and establish customer resources, high requirements for communication and customer management capabilities, and pressure for performance appraisal.
03
Securities broker
The recruitment demand of the securities industry is related to the heat of the investment market. When the stock market is good, the recruitment demand of securities will be more active. Securities brokers are also marketing positions, and their main jobs are customer development and services, securities investment and financial products and business promotion, and commission ratios.
This position will give priority to those who have obtained professional qualifications or special qualifications for securities brokers.
04
Securities analyst/financial researcher
The main job of this position is to analyze the securities market, securities values and trends, and publish research reports to investors or institutions.
This type of position requires master students who have systematically studied securities analysis, finance and other knowledge, and it is best to also understand accounting and finance, audit knowledge, and have good customer communication and expression and professional writing skills.
05
Investment banking salesperson
The entry threshold for investment banking is very high. In addition to basic professional skills, talent recruitment in this type of direction also has high requirements for professional skills and cultural dimensions, including communication skills, teamwork, project management, etc. In addition, having an international perspective is also one of the qualities they value.
06
Company management positions
Most students participated in some social practices during their Master of Finance degree and had certain work experience. Therefore, when they officially entered society, they could also find some management positions, such as production management, administrative management, personnel management, financial management, etc. Representative enterprises: available in all walks of life.

03
03
Soft background requirements
In terms of soft requirements, finding a good internship is very important for applying to prestigious schools. However, internships in general state-owned banks, such as Bank of China, are actually not very meaningful because they cannot access the core work content; internships in insurance companies in Hong Kong are helpful to students, but they are still a bit weak when applying to top universities.
If you want to apply for a good school, it is recommended to find the following two types of internships:
Four major: It is recommended that students in big cities choose winter vacation internships, because the annual review tasks of the four majors at the end of the year are relatively large, and they need more interns, and they can also come into contact with more core audit work
Domestic securities companies: such as CITIC, CICC, CITIC Construction Investment and other large securities companies. In American schools, this type of internship is relatively valuable. It should be noted that the business department is actually not very helpful for application. It is best to enter the core departments such as the research department, investment banking department, etc.
04
Administrative background requirements
Master of finance in various schools in the United States For applicants' background requirements, we can roughly divide schools into the following categories:
Schools with strong computer or engineering backgrounds pay more attention to the reputation of top universities in China, and at the same time require students to have relatively strong logical thinking skills. It is not recommended that pure literature and business students apply to
Schools with strong scientific research skills pay attention to GPA.For example: Brandeis, Texas Austin, the GPA is mandatory not less than 3.5/4
Schools that focus on internship and work ability, such as Boston College: When the project is opened, it basically only recruits students with work experience. Students who have admitted fresh graduates in the past 4-5 years have relatively strong internship experience
Schools that students with liberal arts and non-financial backgrounds can apply to: such as Tulane, Duke (financial direction under management), Fordham (International Finance), Pepperdine (Financial Analysis, International Business), etc., do not mandate the undergraduate background and the requirements for pre-study courses are not high
There are financial projects but in schools with fewer admissions in China, such as Vanderbilt University, Chinese students are less than 8%, UC Berkley has applied for domestic students in the past two years, and UCB prefers students with international backgrounds
