Everyone has been paying attention to Taiwan’s affairs these days. Speaking of Taiwan, we have to mention a company, which is TSMC.
Many people may not know that TSMC officially surpassed Alibaba and Tencent in market value not long ago, becoming the listed company with the highest market value in China.
TSMC's market value is now as high as more than US$400 billion, and TSMC's profit last year was close to US$10 billion. It can be said that this company has developed very well in recent years.
Since the United States imposed an embargo on Huawei this chip, many Chinese people have begun to understand the strategic significance of the chip. When it comes to chips, this industry cannot avoid TSMC.
TSMC is the world's largest chip foundry company . Now there is only TSMC in the world that produces three NM chips, and other companies do not have this process at present.
Many people say it’s just an OEM company? However, chip foundry and foundry in ordinary enterprises are completely different concepts. Now only a few companies in the world can produce chips, and the only one that can achieve the highest level is TSMC. Many famous chip companies cooperate with TSMC.
Since Huawei was banned by the United States, many people are wondering if TSMC was in the mainland, not in Taiwan, would things be much easier today? So many people are thinking about a question: when the founder of TSMC, , Zhang Zhongmou, , returned to China to start a business, why didn’t he choose to start a business in the mainland? Instead, went to Taiwan to start a business?
You should know that Zhang Zhongmou actually grew up in the mainland and went to study in the United States at the age of 18. Since Zhang Zhongmou grew up in the United States, why did he choose not the mainland but Taiwan when he came back?
Let’s first talk about Zhang Zhongmou, who is known as the father of chip foundry in the world, and the chip foundry industry has also promoted the development.
Zhang Zhongmou's father was the director of a finance bureau in a county in Ningbo that year. Zhang Zhongmou happened to encounter wars when he was a child, so their whole family lived in many cities, leaving their footprints.
Later they returned to Chongqing from this Hong Kong. When he was eighteen years old, Zhang Zhongmou was admitted to Harvard University in the United States with excellent results.
The year he went to the United States to study, he was the only one of the more than a thousand freshmen who entered the school was Chinese. Afterwards, he went to MIT in the United States to study this mechanical engineering.
After graduation, he entered a semiconductor company in Boston. Later, when he was 27 years old, he went to this Texas Instruments . At that time, Texas Instruments was not a giant in semiconductors. At that time, the company's annual revenue was less than US$100 million.
This Zhang Zhongmou has worked at Texas Instruments for more than ten years, and has become the vice president from this ordinary employee. During this period, Texas Instruments has also developed rapidly in the semiconductor industry. When Zhang Zhongmou was at his highest, he was the vice president of the company who managed more than 30,000 employees.
By 1985, Zhang Zhongmou decided to return to Taiwan to start a business. At that time, he was also invited to serve as the director of a research institute in Taiwan. Then, TSMC, which he founded in Taiwan in 1987, began to do this foundry for major chip companies around the world.
Why did you choose Taiwan instead of the mainland? To put it bluntly, the United States has blocked China's technological blockade. If Zhang Zhongmou started his business in the mainland, it would definitely not be able to create TSMC, because TSMC must use the lithography machine produced in the Netherlands for OEM. In fact, many people think that this lithography machine is produced in the Netherlands. In fact, a lithography machine requires more than a thousand parts, and all of these parts are provided by top companies in major industries.
Although many of these companies are scattered in countries around the world, they are controlled by the US capital, or many countries are allies of the US.
So to put it bluntly, most of the chip industry is still controlled by American capital. Whether it is from this design to this OEM, some upstream raw materials, and the production of lithography machines, it is basically the TSMC controlled by US capital.
If you open his shareholder list, you will see that it is basically the one in the United States that is controlled by the company. Although Zhang Zhongmou is the founder of TSMC, he is actually just an professional manager , and he is not the company's largest shareholder.
TSMC's market value is more than 400 billion yuan, and Zhang Zhongmou's personal net worth is only about 2 billion yuan. So in fact, Zhang Zhongmou is just an agent, and he is not the real person to talk to. To put it bluntly, if Zhang Zhongmou had not returned to Taiwan to establish TSMC, others would have returned to Taiwan to establish similar companies. Because in fact, the decision is not in his hands, but in American capital.
