This is a sentence that Deng Shichang, a general of the Beiyang Navy in the late Qing Dynasty, a national hero, and the captain of the "Zhiyuan" in the Beiyang Fleet. This sentence shows his strong patriotism. He was one of the earliest naval officers in China, and eventually sank into the waves with his beloved warship.
1894, the Japanese Navy suddenly launched an attack on the Qing Dynasty navy in Huanghai Dadonggou. The Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1895. Deng Shichang commanded the "Zhiyuan" ship and the soldiers on the ship to fight bravely. Subsequently, several Japanese ships besieged the "Zhiyuan" ship. Due to the strong firepower of the Japanese army, the "Zhiyuan" ship was injured in many places, the entire ship caught fire, and the ship was tilted.
At this time, Deng Shichang encouraged the officers and soldiers on the ship and said, "We joined the army to defend our country and have long put life and death aside. Now that the Japanese pirates are invading, they can only use their hull to hit the main force of the Japanese army and die together!" After that, he resolutely drove the ship to the starboard side of the Japanese main ship " Yoshino ". Seeing this, the Japanese army was shocked and concentrated artillery fire to launch a fierce attack on the "Zhiyuan" ship. One of the shells concentrated the torpedo launch tube of the already scarred "Zhiyuan" ship. The torpedo inside the tube exploded, causing the "Zhiyuan" ship to sink.
After Deng Shichang fell into the sea, his entourage wanted to save him with a lifebuoy, but was sternly rejected. He said, "I am determined to kill the enemy and serve the country. Now I die on the battlefield, which is righteous. Don't be greedy for life and fear death, and live a life of silence!" Xue Ruichun gave birth to three sons and five daughters for Deng Shichang. The eldest son Deng Haohong inherited his inheritance and worked in the Guangdong Navy and died in 1947. The second son Deng Haoyang died young. The youngest son, Deng Haoqian, is a posthumous son. He once served in the Navy Department of the Republic of China. He died in 1969 in , Wuxi, and has no children in his life.
Deng Shichang's eldest daughter is named Deng Xiuyuan. The second daughter Deng Xiuchan married his father's classmate and friend Nanyang Navy Super Martial Ship Pipeline Ye Fu's son Ye Shuozhou. The third daughter is named Deng Xiujuan; the fourth daughter Deng Xiuting; the fifth daughter Deng Xiuhai.
