Although electric car manufacturers often provide battery warranty to alleviate this concern, the actual cost of replacing batteries outside the warranty is obviously a considerable fee.
As Current Automotive points out, although most electric car manufacturers usually offer a battery warranty of at least 8 years or 100,000 miles, there are still opportunities outside the warranty. Warranty usually covers defects and production issues, but does not include possible human damage.
According to Current Automotive, a Tesla Model 3 hit a large rock, causing the battery pack running under the cockpit to malfunction.
Although the battery pack is not a whole large battery, it is composed of multiple modules, each of which contains hundreds of battery cells. But if a module fails, the entire battery pack will not work. The total bill for replacing the battery pack is close to 110,000 yuan (about 165,500.67 US dollars), of which the cost of power batteries alone is as high as 87,000 yuan (about 13,500 US dollars), and includes nearly 15,000 yuan (about 2,299.27 US dollars) of labor costs, as well as other expenses.
It is reported that the Tesla service department charges RMB 1,135.75 per hour (about US$175), and the entire replacement work takes more than 13 hours.
Other expenses include damaged front and body panels and other parts. Therefore, if you replace the battery in Tesla's service department, the cost will be at least close to 104,000 yuan (about 16,000 US dollars).
It is worth noting that the Tesla battery warranty includes the battery fire, even if it is caused by user error or other circumstances that are not covered by warranty.
Last year, media reported that Tesla may launch a battery replacement and recycling plan in China, but it has not been officially announced.
