China News Network, Beijing, May 16 (Reporter Wang Xi) MLB Major League Baseball officially announced on the 16th that Gong Haicheng, a student from the MLB Baseball Development Center, officially signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates of the MLB Major League Baseball, becoming the second person to be signed by the Major League club among the young players trained by MLB in China after Xu Guiyuan.

Gong Haicheng from Shanghai has loved baseball since he was a child. His Shanghai Gaodong Primary School is also one of the traditional strong teams in the MLB "Play Ball" project. When he was promoted to junior high school, Gong Haicheng successfully entered the MLB Changzhou Baseball Development Center located in the Beisu High School in Changzhou City through the selection, and he had trained at the MLB Changzhou Baseball Development Center and the MLB Nanjing Baseball Development Center.

Gong Haicheng, 18 years old this year, has a height of 188 cm. In last year's Asian Youth Baseball Championship, Gong Haicheng served as the main starting pitcher of the U18 Chinese team, with a very eye-catching performance and won the "Best Right Strike Award". In the WBC World Baseball Classic Tournament held in March this year, Gong Haicheng played as the youngest member of the Chinese national baseball team, becoming an important milestone in his baseball career.

MLB Major League Baseball Managing Director of China Wang Peng said that since its establishment in Wuxi in Jiangsu in 2009, the Major League Baseball has adhered to the three major policies of integration of education and sports, scientific training, and humanistic care. This time, Gong Haicheng realized his dream and achieved another fruitful result.

MLB Major League Baseball Development General Manager Rick Dell also pointed out, "Gong Haicheng's signing of the Pirates once again proves the correctness of the 'teaching and sports integration' path we have promoted in the MLB Baseball Development Center for eight years. Xu Guiyuan and Gong Haicheng have the opportunity to work hard at the world's highest-level baseball league, setting an example for all students who study and train at the MLB Baseball Development Center, and becoming their goal to strive for progress."

Wang Peng emphasized that the MLB Major League Baseball officially entered China in 2007 and built a baseball promotion system with education as the core. Now the MLB "Play Ball" Youth Baseball Development Project covers more than 100 primary schools across the country, and together with three MLB Baseball Development Centers located in Wuxi, Changzhou and Nanjing, it forms the core of this baseball development system. "Gong Haicheng, who officially signed with the MLB Pittsburgh Pirates today, is the leader trained by this system. I believe that in the next few years, we will see more new baseball seedlings stand out from this system and open a new chapter for the development of Chinese baseball." (End)
