(Global Travel News, August 24, 2022) Japan plans to increase the daily number of inbound passengers from 20,000 to 50,000 starting from September. Japan is also considering gradually easing testing restrictions, such as no longer requiring travelers who have completed vaccinations to be tested. Currently, travelers entering Japan need to provide a negative nucleic acid test result within 72 hours. Japan National Tourism Administration data shows that the country received 144,500 international tourists in July, a year-on-year increase of 2.8 times, but still less than 5% of the same period in 2019.

Starting from June 10, 2022 local time, Japan has restarted the entry procedures for foreign tourists that were suspended due to the new coronavirus epidemic entry countermeasures, and resumed accepting foreign tourists from 98 countries and regions including the United States, South Korea, and China. This is the first time in 2 years and 2 months that Japan has officially accepted incoming tourists for tourism purposes. Travelers from 98 low-risk countries and regions do not need to undergo COVID-19 testing and quarantine when entering Japan. However, relevant passengers must go through the immigration formalities through the travel company. In addition, starting from June, Japan has expanded the upper limit of the number of people allowed to enter the country in a single day to 20,000, including tourists, and requires all arrivals to comply with epidemic prevention measures such as wearing masks.
