According to a report by Cambodia Huashang Media on July 23, recently, some people with ulterior motives have made remarks on social media criticizing Cambodia for its serious debt arrears to China and that it has "lost its independence and sovereignty." On July 20, Cambodian People's Party spokesman Su Aisan said that many countries in the world owe China debts, including a Western country that owes China 100 times more debt than Cambodia.

Sue Aisan clarified that in fact, Cambodia owes about US$4 billion in debt to China, which only accounts for less than 28% of the GDP, which is equivalent to an average debt of about US$400 per person.
Su Aishan pointed out that the debt owed by some EU countries accounts for more than 100% of their GDP. A country with one of the largest economies in the West owes China more than $1 trillion in debt, which is equivalent to an average debt of $40,000 per person, 100 times more than Cambodia.
Su Aisan said that it was precisely because of the large amount of debt arrears that he thought of raising import taxes from other countries, which even triggered a world trade war.
On July 18, when attending the 60th anniversary event of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and China, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the Cambodian government led by Hun Sen has inherited the traditional friendship cultivated by the older generations of the two countries and firmly pursues friendly policies towards China. Stand with China without reservation on issues involving China's core interests and major concerns.
Wang Yi said that Cambodia is not a big country in terms of area, but it is Cambodia that has established a strong character in the world that small countries are not afraid of power and pressure. "The kindness of a drop of water should be repaid by a spring of water." This is a Chinese cultural tradition. China has always stood firmly with the Cambodian people, firmly supported Cambodia in safeguarding its sovereignty and legitimate rights and interests, and helped Cambodia achieve development to the best of its ability.
