applies for LLM, welcome to cooperate with us (WeChat: myron915)
hello, hello everyone! I am Teacher Sidney of Youshuo International Study Abroad. I once again share my tips for applying to prestigious LLM schools with all the students who are about to apply for LLM. I hope it can help more students. | All truth is only to win your most satisfactory choice, we are the luxury goods in the study abroad world |
In the past month, two major events have happened for all law students who are about to graduate. One is the announcement of the results of the subjective questions of the law exam on November 30, 2018. This announcement made some people happy and some sad. The students who got the certificate must have already filled the voting circle, and the students who did not get the certificate only In a bad mood, quietly turn off the circle of friends function. Another thing is the postgraduate entrance examination that ended on December 23, 2018. As soon as the postgraduate entrance examination ended, many students were already checking whether the in the cafeteria of Peking University or the Renmin University was delicious , and which instructor was nice, but faced with the cruel application process Compared to other schools, perhaps more students are not sure whether they can go to school and are worried about finding a second way.
So is there a second way? Of course!
We are all newcomers to the legal profession. Why can some people get into the red circle, while most can only get into small law firms? We are also engaged in dispute resolution. Why can some people chat and laugh happily at the CIETAC, while most people can only suffer in the grassroots courts? It's all about salary, so why can some people get an entry level (starting salary) of 20,000 yuan, while most people can only get a salary of a few thousand and wait for a salary increase?
GPA They all have the same GPA, the undergraduate colleges are all the same undergraduate colleges, and the backgrounds are the same, and most people are only one away from the red circle [LLM degree]
What is LLM? L.L.M. (English: Master of Law, Latin: Legum Magister), also known as Master of Laws , is one of the mainstream overseas law degrees and the first-level law degree in the United States.
Some students may want to ask? Why did you get a master's degree in the first place? No LLB? That’s right! American law schools After the reform in the second half of the last century, they no longer offer a bachelor's degree in law (L.L.B.) but only offer three postgraduate degrees: LLM, JD (Juris Doctor), and JSD (Juris Doctor). Now if you say you hold an LLB degree in the United States, there are only three possibilities: you are over 60 years old (some old judges of the U.S. Supreme Court still have LLB degrees in their early years), you studied abroad Bachelor's degree in law, or you are talking nonsense. So... students who want to study law in the United States can give up for the time being... but you are still welcome to study in American law schools at the graduate level!
| So what is the point of an LLM degree|?
① Better job opportunities
Let’s take a look at the recruitment requirements of the Intellectual Property Department of Zhong Lun Law Firm: “T14 LLM, NY bar passed” is translated as (Top 14 law school graduate, passed New York State bar exam) . The chairman of King & Wood Mallesons said at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law China Alumni Conference a few days ago: "In the future recruitment of law firms, we will be more inclined to recruit LLM students and very outstanding undergraduates. And for domestic Wang Par believes that a master's degree in law is not the best choice from the perspective of practicing law because it takes too long and does not have the English advantage of studying abroad. "Many red circle firms now choose "T14 LLM." +NY bar" is a standard requirement for recruitment, and with this item, you will be one step closer to your dream of 20,000 entry level per year. At the same time, like the "NY bar" mentioned above, the basic requirement for participating in the United States is to obtain an LLM or JD degree. Does being a lawyer in New York State sound like a big deal?
② More practical legal education
I think everyone can see the horror of domestic graduate education. Chinese graduate students, especially those from prestigious universities, are obsessed with scientific research every day. They follow their tutors one by one on key topics, publish in core journals, and have perfect academic abilities. Some domestic scholars even commented that "it is no problem to graduate with a domestic master's degree and get a doctorate from overseas." ".However, after some domestic masters finally graduate, they do not choose to continue studying for a doctorate but enter the workplace. Unfortunately, they will find that their seniors or even bosses at work are actually overseas peers at the same level as them. The current general graduation time for domestic law masters who are research-oriented is 3 years; for professional law masters, the graduation time is also 3 years. Only the Farben Law Masters have a slightly shorter graduation time of 2 years, but they all have written mathematics. A graduation thesis of 10,000 words is required. In contrast, LLM only takes one year, and as a taught course, LLM not only ensures the academic foundation, but also pays more attention to professional education and professional quality cultivation . And if you have further interest in academic research, LLM is usually an essential pre-degree requirement for applying for JSD, and schools such as Yale University and the University of California at Berkeley also offer LLM+thesis projects for you to While studying LLM professional courses, there are also opportunities to conduct research.
③Change linguistics and law
If you are good at English, can you do whatever you want? I'm afraid so. Especially in the legal industry, more and more businesses have English requirements. First of all, foreign companies and multinational companies will require their legal departments and lawyers to be able to speak English fluently; many times, even if the client is a pure-blood Chinese company, you will find that it has an overseas related party without knowing it, or even is simply being hired overseas. It is controlled by the main agreement; and even if you hide in a grassroots court, you will find that the evidence submitted by the parties is sometimes mixed with hundreds of pages of English contracts! The 21st century is an open century; China in the 21st century is an open China; law students who do not know English in the 21st century are...
So what is good English in the legal industry? CET600, IELTS 7.0? no. If you have not systematically studied legal English and received a common law education, your English major friends may not know that consideration is not "consideration" but "in consideration"; inn is not "tavern" but "lawyer school" ; found for is not the past tense of "looking for XXX" but "(judgment) supports (a certain party)". Obviously, the key to being able to freely use English as a working language in the legal industry is not to "learn legal English" but to "learn law in English."
④ Studying law at a prestigious North American school
I think someone must have asked: What is the T14 mentioned before? American law schools have always had a tradition of ranking based on their seniority. Every year when the US News law school rankings are announced, some law schools are always happy and some are sad. This is not entirely true. There are 14 law schools that are basically never ranked. Sadly, they are T14. The reason why it is T14, not T15, T13, and T16, is because the rankings of these 14 law schools are very stable. The top 14 lineup basically only changes their rankings internally, with the eighth falling to ninth, and the fifth rising to fourth. It is very rare for a college to fall out of or squeeze into T14. Therefore, T14 has formed the first echelon of American law schools, a famous group.
They are:
Yale University (Yale University)
Harvard University (Harvard University)
Stanford University ( Stanford University )
University of Chicago ( University of Chicago )
Columbia University ( Columbia University )
New York University ( New York University )
University of Pennsylvania ( University of Pennsylvania )
University of Virginia ( University of Virginia )
University of Michigan, Ann Arbo ( University of Michigan, Ann Arbo )
Duke University ( Duke University )
University of California, Berkeley (University of California, Berkeley) )
Northwestern University (Northwestern University)
Cornell University (Cornell University)
Georgetown University ( Georgetown University )
Of course, in addition to the above 14, there are 6 colleges and universities that although they cannot squeeze into the T14, they have always stayed within the 20th place.Being a star is not the most tiring thing, being a star's stand-in is the most tiring thing. They are:
University of Texas, Austin (University of Texas, Austin)
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
Vanderbilt University ( Vanderbilt University )
Washington University in St. Louis (Washington University in St. Louis)
University of South California ( University of Southern California )
University of Minnesota Twin Cities (University of Minnesota)
and the special participation award. Emory University (Emory University) wants to squeeze into the T20 every year but cannot.
[Having said so much, how can I get an LLM degree?]
Everyone knows that the GMAT is a daunting prospect for business majors, and most majors such as education and statistics face the fear of being dominated by the GRE, and for the vast majority of Americans, For law students - what they have to face is, LSAT. How difficult is the LSAT? Let’s experience the horror of LSAT:
LSAT, well, it’s so difficult!
Peking University academic master, um... a master of philosophy, um... what? Have you taken the LSAT 8 times? ! It took 8 times to finally score 22 points? ! Therefore, it is no joke to say that studying medicine and law in the United States is the most difficult and most promising. If you can get 175 on the LSAT, then you can start to imitate the plot in "Fan Jin passed the exam". Please shout "Oh! I won", and then run out the door while laughing without stopping. But please note that we have a premise before, that is, native American law students. That’s right, because American students generally want to give priority to JD studies in order to obtain a more systematic legal education (the American legal market prefers JD graduates), they have to go through the LSAT single-plank bridge. For most Chinese students, overseas law school experience is mainly about understanding foreign legal systems, improving their ability to apply foreign legal languages, and obtaining overseas practice qualifications, so LLM is enough.
LLM does not require LSAT. It only requires you to have a language score that meets the standards and have an undergraduate degree. I think this probably makes LLM the graduate program with the lowest threshold in the United States. With an undergraduate degree and language proficiency, you can boldly apply for the LLM program at an American law school. What's more, if you are interested in working in the United States, some American law schools also offer the opportunity to convert from LLM to JD, and this opportunity often does not require you to take the LSAT exam.
So, how can I apply for LLM? Today’s dry information sharing is coming to an end. I am teacher Sidney from Yoosuredu International Study Abroad. I have received multiple offers from University of California, Berkeley School of Law, University of Southern California School of Law, University of Warwick School of Law, National University of Singapore School of Law, etc. If you plan to apply for LLM, I look forward to working with you. Cooperate with me to meet famous universities in the world!
