Japanese Architecture and Structural Design

In this revised course, basic and modern methods of Japanese structural design will be explained using a historical overview and Tokyo Institute of Technology 's campus architecture as a case study. Learners will be able to explain and apply seismic design concepts such as energy-dissipating braced frames, spine frames, seismic reinforcement, seismic isolation, and seismic design of spatial structures. Drawing on the faculty's past 20 years of design experience, sustainability considerations, practical complexities, and their solutions will be presented using campus buildings as design examples, with immersive 360-degree interactive videos. Learners will also gain insight into the collaboration between architects and engineers through interviews with architecture professors.

About this course

Skip About this course

In this revised course, in-depth explanations cover various concepts related to architecture and structural design, with detailed articles for further learning. Modern approaches to seismic design and retrofit will be covered through case studies of some unique campus buildings in Tokyo. This course first introduces the structural design progress from traditional wooden buildings to the first steel high-rise structures, the metabolic movement and the evolution of modern Japanese spatial structures. Concepts such as "integrated facade engineering" and "grid-skin structures" are discussed and illustrated through case studies of Tokyo Institute of Technology campus buildings, where seismic performance is sustainably improved while considering environmental performance and aesthetics.

Additionally, 360-degree videos of Tokyo Institute of Technology buildings provide learners with an immersive experience. The application of the grid skin concept in RC buildings using shear walls and double-layer frame systems is discussed. Covers modern response control strategies for achieving immediate post-earthquake occupancy, such as rocking frame systems and seismic isolation of steel buildings, and explains practical considerations when employing these systems through the design of campus buildings. Reticulated shell systems and their unique seismic response characteristics are explained. The design of a subway station near campus was used to illustrate the practical and technical difficulties of designing lightweight roofs. Finally, some interviews between Professor L. Stalder of ETH Zurich, Professor T. Takeuchi and Professor Y. Tsukamoto of Tokyo Institute of Technology discuss the importance of collaboration between structural engineers and architects.

Heritage' in Nation Building: South Korea and Post-Conflict Japanese Colonial Occupation Architecture)

This book explores the Korean response to the architecture of Japan's colonial occupation of Korea and how architecture illustrates the relationship between difficult heritage and the formation of national identity. Hyun Kyung Lee details the specifics of Seoul , investigating how buildings were selectively destroyed, preserved, or rebuilt to build or challenge a place's cultural identity as a new political order developed.Additionally, she illuminates the traditional Korean concept of feng shui as a core indigenous framework for understanding the relationship between space and power as it relates to nation-building processes and heritageization.

Through a detailed study of little-known cases outside East Asia, Difficult Heritage in Nation-Building will expand the Western-centric framework for the study of built heritage by introducing a novel Asian perspective.

《Mirei Shigemori - Rebel in the Garden: Modern Japanese Landscape Architecture》

Mirei Shigemori had a significant influence on the development of Japanese landscape architecture in the twentieth century. Active since the 1920s, he founded the Kyoto Garden Association in 1932. In 1939, he designed his first masterpiece, the garden of the main hall of Tofukuji Temple. From then on, he designed 240 gardens across Japan until his death in 1975. The most famous of them are Tenlaian Tea Garden (1969) and Matsuo Taishaen Garden (1975). The main characteristic of his gardens is that they respect tradition while deviating from the traditional paradigm by opening it up to the influence of Western modernism in its own language. The first part of the book introduces Shigemori's life and the factors that influenced his work. Part II contains detailed illustrations of 17 gardens. The book is published as a new and revised edition.

"The Art of Japanese Architecture: History / Culture / Design"

"The Art of Japanese Architecture: History / Culture / Design" A complete overview of Japanese architecture . The book begins with a discussion of early prehistoric dwellings in Japan and ends with a description of the work of important modern Japanese architects. Along the way, it discusses the iconic buildings and architectural styles that Japan is so famous for—from the elegant Shinden and Sukiyaki aristocratic villas like Kinkakuji's Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, to the majestic samurai castles like Himeji and Matsumoto, to the tranquil Zen Buddhist gardens and teahouses, to the rustic Minka thatched-roof farmhouses and Shinto shrines.

This book details every period in the development of Japanese architecture and displays and discusses the most important structures - including dozens of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The aesthetic trends of each period are presented within the context of Japanese society at the time, providing a unique in-depth understanding of the ways in which Japanese architectural styles and architecture developed over time and the tremendous diversity visible today.

This book is illustrated with hundreds of hand-drawn 3D watercolor illustrations and color photographs as well as prints, maps and diagrams. The new edition features dozens of new photos and a convenient hardcover format perfect for travelers.

"Beyond Utopia: Japanese Metabolism Architecture and the Birth of Mythopia"

Megastructure proposals put forward by the Japanese Metabolism Group are often compared to the concept of Utopia. Beyond this one-sided understanding, Agnes Nyilas believes that the megastructure of metabolizing is not simply utopian, but represents a unique hybrid genre: myth masquerading as utopia. While its megastructure appears to depict an ideal future situation like a utopia, it also includes certain cultural images rooted in the collective (un)consciousness of the Japanese people, consistent with the general interpretation of myth. The main narrative of Beyond Utopia thus follows the gradual unfolding of the mythical character of its megastructure.

Myth is treated here as an interdisciplinary subject consistent with contemporary myth theory. After elucidating the mechanisms behind the growing demand for new myths in architecture (The Origins of Myths), the first part discovers the formal characteristics of metabolic megastructures to hint at the true intentions behind them. Based on this, the second part is a re-examination of their design approach, aiming to clarify the functionality of the myth and propose the meaning behind it. Finally, the third part deals with the theme of mythology by revealing the meanings that unfold in the story, and suggests a new reading of metabolic urban theory: an attempt to reconsider traditional Japanese concepts of space.
