In 1954, General Hong Xuezhi had just returned from studying at the Nanjing Military Academy, and was immediately invited to have a talk by General Huang Kecheng, secretary-general of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China. The specific content of the talk is unknown, but Hong Xuezhi accepted a major mission - to serve as deputy minister and chief of staff of the National General Logistics Department.

After accepting the appointment, Hong Xuezhi gave up the opportunity to continue his studies and began to supervise and adjust the coordination work of various agencies and departments in the established General Logistics Department.
Having seen too many bloody scenes before, Hong Xuezhi secretly made up his mind to improve the army's medical system and build a first-class PLA hospital.
In the 1950s, the most famous hospital in Beijing was undoubtedly Peking Union Medical College Hospital .
This hospital was established by Americans and had the most advanced medical equipment and medical standards in China at that time. After the founding of New China, , there were more and more diplomatic missions from various countries in the capital city of Beijing. Foreign personnel had high requirements for the medical environment and relied heavily on the Union Hospital at that time.

But after all, Union Hospital is a military-controlled unit, and foreigners, soldiers, and even dignitaries receive medical treatment together. On the one hand, there is no privacy, and on the other hand, it is difficult to supervise the hospital in place, which is not conducive to the security of confidentiality work..
For this reason, Premier Zhou Enlai specifically instructed the Union Hospital to re-plan the department and establish a high-level hospital specially managed by the military.
301 Hospital
After Hong Xuezhi became the deputy minister of the Logistics Department, he vigorously rectified the medical system. The "Hospital directly under the Military Commission" was renamed "The 301st Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army" .

In fact, the predecessor of 301 was the code name of a school in the North China Military Region. It moved from Tianjin to Beijing in 1952 and built a clinical hospital in Wukesong with only 400 beds. The Military Commission planned it to be managed by Union Medical College of China.
After everything was ready, another big problem arose in the introduction of talents.
After all, in addition to high-end medical equipment, the key factor that affects the medical level of a first-class hospital is medical staff. However, not long after the founding of the People's Republic of China, talents in all aspects are in short supply, and medical staff are even more difficult to find..
After much thought, Hong Xuezhi decided to transfer people from Union Medical College Hospital. However, as the best hospital at the time, Union Medical College Hospital was also very difficult to make a choice.

Cultivating an excellent medical staff requires a lot of manpower and material resources. This method of tearing down the east wall to make up for the west wall can indeed support the 301 Hospital. But where will Xiehe Hospital go from here?
Therefore, it was originally planned that 80 doctors would be transferred to the 301st Hospital, but in the end, less than 40 doctors were transferred to the 301st Hospital. This also made the 301st Hospital very dissatisfied. The person in charge notified Hong Xuezhi, hoping that he could mediate again so that the 301st Hospital could continue as planned.
"What's there to fight for? Use as many as you come, whether it's 301 or Concorde , which one is not the country's own hospital? At present, Union Hospital needs to receive foreign personnel for medical treatment normally, and it needs more technical strength than 301. They represent the technical level and national image of our new China. There is a lack of People are transferred to the Military Medical University, can't we train them ourselves?"

Hong Xuezhi held a bowl of water in his hands. He also understood that tearing down the east wall to make up for the west wall was not a long-term solution. Maybe the Union Hospital would lose its ability to treat diplomats before 301 was officially put into operation.
Union Medical College Hospital was naturally a little ashamed after hearing the news, and immediately transferred a vice president to help establish a nursing school to solve the worries of 301.
As the saying goes, good things come hard. With the deployment of Premier Zhou and the coordination of Vice Minister Hong Xuezhi, the People's Liberation Army General Hospital continued to replenish medical personnel, increase medical equipment, and expand the scale based on the 301 Hospital. Finally, in 1954, the hospital was officially renamed "The People's Liberation Army 301 Hospital."

Until 1957, it was renamed "General Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army" , and the designation "301" disappeared from then on.
What is gratifying is that neither the common people nor the soldiers have forgotten the former number and still habitually call it "301 Hospital".
At that time, our country had very close relations with the Soviet Union, so the earliest construction of the 301 Hospital was entirely in Soviet style.
The door is recessed, and there are many stone pillars standing on the empty steps. Once inside the building, offices and wards are separated on both sides. Scientific research and teaching rooms such as laboratories and lecture theaters are adjacent to the office space. In order to accommodate more patients, the hospital has a total of seven floors.

The Soviet Union was affected by the war. In order to protect the wounded and try to avoid becoming bombing targets, hospitals were never built tall and empty. Instead, they were built deep underground. .
The 301 Hospital was deeply affected. It built seven floors and 66 wards underground, with more than 40 beds in each ward, totaling about 700 beds.
At the same time, the Soviet Union counterattacked in order to prevent the enemy from seizing key buildings. These buildings not only made extremely high use of space, but also fully reflected the Soviet people's strategic thinking .
The underground passages of the entire building extend in all directions. People who are familiar with the structure can go to other department buildings of the hospital wherever they want. However, for those who are not familiar with it, they often get lost underneath and cannot find the exit.

Yes, the design of the 301 Hospital was based on the Kirov Hospital of the former Soviet Army in St. Petersburg. It is said that its drawings have been improved many times. After all, Kirov Medical College is not only famous in the Soviet Union, but also a first-class hospital internationally.
If there is any medical level that can compete with the United States, it must be the Soviet Union.
Therefore, Kirov Medical College gathered the highest-level medical personnel in the Soviet Union, integrated teaching, scientific research, and health care, and used advanced medical equipment to contribute a lot to international high-end medical research. At the same time, it provided superb and effective support capabilities for the Soviet troops and people.
Therefore In the early stages of construction, 301 Hospital was compared with the international first-class standards, and vowed to build it into a first-class scientific research hospital in the country.

As a result, since the day the 301st Hospital was built, it has become the largest general hospital with the most complete facilities and the highest medical level in the entire military.
The most famous one is the ward building located in the south of No. 301 Hospital. It is a ward building with a special mission. is called the "South Building" .
The reason why this building is famous is that it has hosted many senior intellectuals and even many national leaders.
Therefore, the south building is the most heavily guarded place in the entire hospital. Special certificates are required for entry and exit. The guards on both sides of the door are serious and cautious, always alert to emergencies. There are also mobile sentries in groups of three around the area. It can be said that first-class defensive measures have been taken.

No matter who enters, they must undergo the strictest questioning. Therefore, in the eyes of the public, the South Building is mysterious and majestic. Even the medical staff who come to work here can only enter after accepting medical tasks and filing detailed records.
Ye Jianying, Ji Xianlin and other key figures have received treatment here, and Mr. Ji Xianlin lived in the South Building for 6 years.
The "special" patient number in the south building
In the winter of 1976, it was a warm winter.
A energetic little leader came to the south building. Although he was polite to the soldiers and medical staff on guard, everyone could see the trace of pain hidden between his brows. He was Comrade Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of reform and opening up..

The hospital immediately paid attention to it, carefully considered the safety and confidentiality plan, and quickly vacated the fifth floor of the south building for Comrade Xiaoping to use alone, and even provided a special elevator so that Comrade Deng Xiaoping could handle the work at hand while he was in the hospital. After
checked all safety issues and made all arrangements for food and accommodation, the hospital immediately began to designate a surgical plan.
According to regulations, the chief's surgical plan must be reported layer by layer and approved by superiors before it can be implemented, and the hospital must strictly keep confidentiality from top to bottom. This is not just an operation, but a special medical mission .
So from doctors to nurses, everyone is prepared and very cautious.

Perhaps sensing everyone's nervousness, Deng Xiaoping smiled and said to the doctor:
"Don't panic, I know the true level of our hospital, and I believe everyone will do their best to treat me, but how can there be any absolutes? No matter what the problem is, I and my family are responsible, and you are not responsible either. Don't worry too much."
As the chief architect of reform and opening up, Deng Xiaoping showed amazing calmness during the operation. He was worried that the anesthetic would affect his judgment at work, so he did not undergo general anesthesia and even did not take painkillers after the operation. Worried about his work, he got out of bed three days later and continued to shine for his beloved motherland.
Many years later, in
982, Marshal Ye Jianying was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at the 301 Hospital. It is a common degenerative disease of the nervous system, which is more common in the elderly.

The initial symptoms include tremors, stiffness of limbs, and abnormal motor function. It can be said that each symptom appears slowly until the patient completely loses his ability to breathe.
"It's okay, it's not like I can't leave. At least I can still work now!"
Marshal Ye Jianying had a good attitude and still wanted to use the remaining time to do more for his country. However, he was soon struck down by the disease again. This time it was not Parkinson's disease, but pneumonia.
Ye Shuai, who is nearly 90 years old, has relapsed into an old illness. Everyone is worried. Even the central government has issued three illness notices in a row. The Great Hall of the People has stopped all activities and made every effort to prepare for Marshal Ye Jianying's 100th anniversary.

But in this situation, After the efforts of the 301 Hospital, Ye Shuai was finally pulled back from the hell by the medical staff !
So much so that Hu Yaobang praised the medical staff of No. 301 Hospital in public, praising them for creating a miracle in medical history, and specially celebrated them in the Great Hall of the People.
But unfortunately, the good times did not last long. Ye Shuai also suffered from serious kidney problems due to his early battlefield battles and overwork after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
In the end, even though Ye Shuai was rescued by medical staff again, the physical damage was too great. Birth, aging, illness and death are the natural laws that cannot be reversed. Ye Shuai, who had worked hard for the country all his life, passed away in the early morning of October 22, 1986.

Also in the 1980s, General Hong Xuezhi, the first contributor to the 301 Hospital, was also admitted to the hospital he founded because of physical discomfort.
At the beginning, General Hong Xuezhi did not want to take up national resources. After all, he had served in the army all his life and was used to pain. He thought that if he endured it, he might be able to get through it.
He asked the doctor at No. 301 Hospital: "Someone told me that there are other ways besides surgery. Notices from Inner Mongolia and Shandong told me about injection therapy, which has quick and good results. I don't want to delay my work because of hospitalization. Please find out if what they said is really effective."
The medical team rejected the plan after thinking about it. They did not want the old general to have any accidents due to his illness, and tried their best to dissuade General Hong Xuezhi from staying in the South Building for treatment.

Unexpectedly, General Hong Xuezhi was not stubborn at all. After hearing the doctor's advice, he checked in directly: "You still have to believe in science. I just want to improve efficiency, so it will be hard for everyone."
General Hong Xuezhi recovered well after the operation. It was not until more than 20 years later, during the SARS epidemic in 2003, that he was admitted to the South Building for observation again because of his age.
But even though the old general is already ninety years old, he still does not want to take up national resources. He still adheres to the idea of "spending less and doing more", and saves when he can.
Three years later, at 22:00 on November 20, 2006, General Hong Xuezhi passed away in the hospital he founded. All the medical staff gathered around the operating table to pay the highest respect to the old general. He was 94 years old.

Being able to sleep in his own achievements must also be a kind of satisfaction for the old general.
In 2003, Ji Xianlin, a master of traditional Chinese culture, was also admitted to the 301 Hospital because of physical discomfort.
His attending doctor at that time was a young female doctor named Chen Wen. Although it was not the first time for her to receive such a "special" patient, she was still very cautious about the elderly Mr. Ji, for fear of hurting him due to her mistakes.
Every time when changing the dressing, Mr. Ji would smile and comfort Chen Wen: "It's okay, little comrade, don't worry about changing the dressing, I don't feel any pain at all."
Chen Wen was very grateful to Mr. Ji for his comfort, but anyone with a discerning eye could see that Mr. Ji's forehead was already covered with big beads of sweat.

During his hospitalization, no matter how much the doctor ordered, there was still an endless stream of friends who came to visit Mr. Ji.
There was even a time when a friend came to our door with more than 20 books by Mr. Ji, hoping that he could sign them as souvenirs. The medical staff present suggested that Mr. Ji choose a few more important books to autograph.
The old man rejected their kindness. Due to physical reasons, his vision was blurred and his hands were shaking unconsciously. He comforted everyone and said: "Don't worry about me, I can sign slowly. I can leave something for future generations and live up to what I have learned."
So Mr. Ji actually signed dozens of books.

He spent six years in the South Building, and his open-minded and cheerful nature inspired the comrades around him all the time. Head nurse Liu Zhenrong always recalled Mr. Ji with deep emotion: "Mr. Ji often talked about Tao Yuanming's story. A poem: "In the great waves, neither joy nor fear, do everything you need to do, no more worries."
In addition to the famous people mentioned above, Yu Qiuli, Nie Rongzhen, Li Xiannian and others have all received treatment in 301.
This ordinary but extraordinary south building records the hard work of medical staff day and night, and also records the last moments of the seniors who worked all their lives for the motherland.
With the improvement of the country's comprehensive strength, the medical level has also been greatly improved. Especially the top hospitals represented by 301 Hospital have been actively learning foreign advanced medical technology, introducing new equipment, and constantly improving their service levels .

Not only that, in 2011, 301 Hospital also proposed a five-year standardization construction goal, starting from five aspects to accelerate the improvement of the hospital's medical level. At the same time, it established a full-process tracking system to achieve real-time information traceability and ensure the reliability of patient treatment.
Thanks to the continuous efforts of the hospital, 301 has become a leader in domestic hospitals. It not only has sufficient medical resources and service personnel, but also is a clinical pilot unit.
After treating countless national leaders, 301 Hospital now not only serves central leaders and military personnel, but also serves ordinary people.

This place was once very mysterious, and countless important figures, leaders and soldiers came here for treatment; it is also very ordinary. After the mysterious aura faded, only the mission of treating diseases and saving lives remained.
Whether leaders or ordinary people, in the last days of 301, they were accompanied by medical staff and fought against death. This is the 301st Hospital of the People's Liberation Army.
