Taiwan's first Dongfeng bicycle lane converted from an abandoned railway is 12 kilometers long and the entire line is flat and easy to travel. The green trees in the middle make the lane look like a green tunnel, which is a bicycle route suitable for both men, women, young and old.
Dongfeng Bicycle Lane is called the "Dongfeng Green Corridor" because of the green trees on both sides of the lane. This was originally the Dongfeng Railway, with the exact name being the Dongshi Railway Branch. It was built in 1958 and is one of the Taiwan Mountain Railway Branches. It passes through Fengyuan, Shigang and Dongshi in Taichung. From Fengyuan to Dongshi, the railway is 14 kilometers long and is known as "the most beautiful railway branch in Taiwan". The last train will be launched on August 31, 1991.
At that time, the annual output of red cypress, flat cypress and fir trees in the Daxue Mountain Forest Farm was as high as 75,000 tons. The project to build the Shigang Dam also had 1.1 million tons of materials to be transported. In addition, there were about 100,000 tons of private agricultural products, and the Dongfeng Railway was built under this demand. The Dongfeng Railway, which entered the history, has laid asphalt, planted flowers and trees under the overall planning, and retained part of the original appearance of the earthquake, becoming a beautiful and humanistic bicycle cycling route.
Dongfeng Bike Lane is located in Shigang. It is opened in 2000 with the renovated bicycle path of the abandoned Dongfeng Railway. This is a very special bicycle path. It is not only Taiwan’s first railway bicycle path. There are many station platforms along the way, but also a closed bicycle path. The entire line is illuminated at night. It is a tourist route that can be cycling day and night, and can be connected to the 4.5-kilometer Houfeng Tie Horse Road.
While riding a bicycle to enjoy the green, cyclists can also visit Shigang Dam. The Shigang Dam, built in 1974, is a Dajiaxi River Blocking Weir designed and completed by Taiwan. It has a total length of about 700 meters. It provides Taichung's people's livelihood and industrial water sources. The water blocking upstream of the dam becomes a big lake. When the water volume is abundant, the green mountains and green waters are beautiful. There is a visitor center at the top of Shigang Dam, which introduces the fish and bird ecology of the Dajia River Basin through slides, three-dimensional relief models, live breeding, etc.
