In order to alleviate traffic congestion at Osaka International Airport, in 1963, the Japanese government decided to reclaim land to build an airport.
1. Construction time

2. Project location
Kansai International Airport is an artificial island in the Quanzhou waters southeast of Osaka Bay. This artificial island is a made of reclaimed in 5 years. It used 180 million cubic meters of earthwork and filled a 5.11 square kilometers of airport land in the sea with a water depth of 17 to 18 meters. The artificial island covers an area of 4.37×1.25 kilometers and is 5 kilometers away from the coast.
33. Construction process
In order to build an artificial island, the construction team pushed three mountains and dug out about 200 million cubic meters of soil. When building the riverbed and seawall, 80 ships started construction at the same time due to the huge amount of work. In addition, in order to connect the artificial island and Osaka City, a bridge was also built. The bridge is 3 kilometers long. After completion, it only takes one hour to drive from the airport to Osaka City, which is very convenient.

4. Airport scale
Kansai International Airport is 8 meters above sea level. The first phase of the project has a 3500-meter-long and 61-meter-wide runway. Artificial island sinks to 50mm in the four years from 1992 to 1996. In order to solve this problem, there are more than one million supporting columns 40 meters deep into the seabed at the bottom of the artificial island.
