AMD today released its all-new generation CPU Ryzen 7000 series, outlining details of four new models, with AMD claiming the 16-core $699 Ryzen 9 7950X flagship being the fastest CPU in the world, while the 6-core $299 Ryzen 5 7600X is the lowest threshold for the first series of Zen 4 processors.

Ryzen 7000 is the first 5nm x86 chip for desktop computer , produced using TSMC's customized process. These chips don’t add more cores than the previous generation, while the frequency is increased to a maximum of 5.7 GHz, a significant 800 MHz increase over the previous generation. This makes the new CPU single-threaded performance 29% higher than the previous generation chips. Additionally, AMD claims to have a 45% performance improvement in some threaded workloads.

AMD says the performance of the Ryzen 7000 series chips brings huge gains compared to the previous generation Ryzen 5000: 29% faster gaming speed and 44% higher application performance.

Compared with its competitors, AMD claims that the overall speed of the high-end 7950X in the game is 11% faster than the fastest chips in Intel , the Core i9 12900K, and even the low-end Ryzen 5 7600X in the game is 5% faster than the 12900K. The

Ryzen 7000 processor will be available on September 27, and new DDR5 memory products that support the new EXPO overclocking profile will also be added. Meanwhile, AMD's partner manufacturers will also provide a strong motherboard lineup, which will be embedded in the new Socket AM5 motherboard. Socket AM5 motherboards support DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 interfaces, allowing the Ryzen family to meet the latest connectivity standards. The

Ryzen 7000 series also provides the processor with an integrated RDNA 2 graphics architecture, which is the first in the Ryzen series. These new iGPUs are designed to provide basic display output, so they are not suitable for gaming. However, the new features enhance Ryzen's positioning in several market segments.

AMD Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 specifications

Ryzen 7000 processor is equipped with an N5 TSMC 5nm process node for core computing chips (CCDs) and uses a TSMC 6nm process for I/O chips (IODs). The comparison between

nm Ryzen 7000 and the previous generation 7nm Ryzen 5000 processor is shown in the following table.

It is worth noting that AMD's Ryzen 7000 platform needs to be combined with DDR5 memory, which will increase the overall system cost.

AMD Ryzen The clock frequency of the chip has been improving. As shown in the figure below, the 7000 series processors have increased clock speed by 800 MHz, the largest single-shot gain in the history of the Ryzen series.

Compared with that, AMD also called up to 170W of TDP for the Ryzen 9 model, making the CPU power of the mainstream Ryzen family hit a new high. So far, the base TDP of the Ryzen 9 model has increased by 65W, the Ryzen 5 has increased by 45W, and the peak power consumption (PPT) of the AM5 slot is now 230W. This is a significant increase from the 142W limit of the previous generation Ryzen 5000.

The practice of exchanging power consumption for performance has advantages and disadvantages for users. We must look at the increase in power consumption through the performance indicators per watt provided by the processor. AMD here says that efficiency has also been improved due to the enhancement of architecture and process nodes.

Intel's Alder Lake Core i9-12900K is faster in most workloads than the currently on sale Ryzen flagships, but its next-generation 13900K adds 8 E-Cores, which will provide higher performance in heavy threaded workloads. Intel also added four E-cores to its 13700K and 13600K.

Intel also introduced E-cores to its value-centric 13400 SKU for the first time, which will create more competitive chips in the low-end market where AMD does not have as much influence. Similarly, pricing and performance are universal brands, and Intel has not issued any official announcements yet.It's clear though, Intel will use a combination of higher clock speeds and more E-Cores to fight the Ryzen 7000.

Ryzen 7000 running score

Compared with the benchmark test of Intel Core i9-12900K, AMD thread rendering applications (vRay speed is 57% higher and energy efficiency is 47% higher) and single-threaded work.

But the most surprising thing is that AMD claims its lowest-end chip, the Ryzen 5 7600X, can also be 5% faster than Intel's flagship 12900K in the game. In fact, AMD says the combination of the Zen 4 architecture and TSMC 5nm nodes provides the best performance improvements in the Ryzen 7000 series.

AMD Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 IPC and microarchitecture

AMD shared some initial details of the Zen 4 architecture, saying it is an iterative improvement to the Zen 3 architecture. In contrast, the Zen 5 architecture that will be released in 2024 is a complete redesign. Prior to that, AMD expected its Zen 3's IPC gain to increase by 8-10%, which is actually 13%, higher than expected.

AMD also increased the operation cache by 1.5 times, improved the load/storage unit, and doubled the L2 cache capacity. During their cooperation with TSMC, they continuously adjusted the 5nm process to form a dedicated 15-layer N5 process node.

In addition, AMD has enabled support for the AVX-512 instruction set.

AMD also claims to provide better energy efficiency in a much smaller package than Intel's Alder Lake processor. AMD compared its Zen 4 core to Intel's Golden Cove, emphasizing that it is only half the size of 3.84mm^2, but it is 47% more energy efficient.

AMD Socket AM5 motherboard, chipset and DDR5 EXPO configuration file

AMD announced that its X670 and X670E chipsets will be available at the time of CPU release, while the newly released B650E and B650 will be available in October. AMD says motherboard pricing will drop to $125. The Ryzen 7000 basic memory speed has not been announced yet.
