Metaphor vs. Similar
Comparison between metaphor and simile
Give you a hint: simile is like a metaphor, but metaphor is not a simile. Metaphor means that one thing is another, while simile means that one thing is like another.
If you want to distinguish between metaphor and simile, the more obvious the simile, the easier it is to be recognized as a rhetorical form.
Maybe someone really thinks Elvis has a particularly noisy hound, imagine if his lyrics are "You are like a hound", or "You are like a hound". In this case, Elvis would use a simile to make it clearer that he is not actually singing to a sad puppy. But on the other hand, the rhythm is not so catchy.
Read these similes carefully, look at these examples and understand how they work:
She’s as cute as a button.
She’s as cute as a button.
She is so cute.
It’s like shooting fish in a barrel.
is like shooting fish in a bucket.
He’s as nutty as a fruitcake.
He went crazy.
You sing like an angel.
You sing like an angel.
She’s as sweet as honey.
She’s as sweet as honey.
