Taiwan, referred to as "Taiwan", is a provincial administrative region of the People's Republic of China, with the provincial capital of Taipei, located on the continental shelf along the southeast coast of mainland China. It is adjacent to the Pacific Ocean in the east, across the Taiwan Strait in the west and facing Fujian Province from Fujian Province, and bounded to the south by Bashi Strait in the south and opposite to Philippine Islands .

"Taiwan" (Chinese pinyin: Táiwān, phonetic notation: ㄊㄞˊ ㄨㄢ) A social name originated from the "Taiwan" community of the Pingpu ethnic minority Siraya who lives in Anping, Tainan today. The Portuguese called Taiwan "Formosa" (Formosa), which originated from the Portuguese Ilha Formosa, meaning "beautiful island". Before the 1950s, it was the main name for Taiwan by Europe and the United States. In ancient Japan, Taiwan was once called "Gaosago", "Gaosago Country" and "Gaoshan Country".
