After the outbreak of the pneumonia epidemic, the word "isolation" has become the hottest word we hear and see. For confirmed patients and suspected patients, they need to be "isolated" according to the doctor's requirements, and the time is usually 14 days.
The "self-isolation" of residents who have been exposed to the disease at home is a quarantine method of controlling the spread of the epidemic in English. At the same time, after the outbreak of the epidemic, Wuhan and many other cities have taken traffic control measures to control the epidemic. In this regard, most Chinese media call it "lockdown", and many related reports in English also use the term quarantine.
Quarantine was introduced from Italian to English, with its original source in ancient Rome Latin, the same source as quarter, which means "one quarter". The original meaning of Quarantine is "40 days".
In the mid-14th century, a devastating plague spread in Europe, which is called the Black Death ( Plague ). It first appeared in the Black Sea region in 1346, then spread to the Mediterranean in the southwest direction, and in the following years it spread throughout Europe, destroying nearly one-third of its population.
After the demise of the Western Roman Empire, Venice, Italy established an independent republic, mainly engaged in maritime trade, connecting the eastern and western parts of Europe. In 1347, in order to prevent the plague caused by merchant ships, the government of Venice stipulated that all ships suspected of carrying infectious diseases must be isolated for a period of time before they can trade with residents on the shore. This measure mandates that all ships from epidemic areas will be allowed to dock for 40 days before they can be docked outside the port. This period of quarantine is called quarantina giorni (space of forty days) in Italian.
For hundreds of years, the actual quarantine period used in Venice and all parts of Europe has been long and short, mainly determined based on the severity of the epidemic. However, since the initial quarantine period was 40 days, this practice is called quarantine according to the Italian Venetian dialect.
Venice originally chose this period of 40 days because according to the Christian Bible New Testament, Jesus lived alone in the wilderness for 40 days before starting his mission.
Among the countless infectious diseases experienced in human history, the Black Death that broke out in the mid-14th century was the most serious one. According to incomplete statistics, in the three years from 1348 to 1350, nearly 30 million people in Europe alone lost their lives due to the Black Death. In three years, the Black Death spread throughout the European continent and spread to Russia, killing nearly one-third to half of Russia's population.
If we count the several plague outbreaks in the next 300 years, nearly half of Europe died from the Black Death, and nearly 300 million people worldwide lost their lives. The most famous Hundred Years' War in history also caused the warring parties to shake hands and make peace due to the outbreak of the Black Death.
It’s no wonder that Europeans have changed their "black" talks. From then on, black has become synonymous with disasters or ominousness in Europeans’ consciousness. When they encounter bad things, they always say black things, what day of the week, etc. After the plague, it took 150 years for Europe's population to revive.
Black Death has not been truly eliminated. The main reason for its disappearance is that it is isolated from pathogens.
There were many epidemics in our country before liberation, and the mortality rate was extremely high. It is transmitted through rat flea bites, respiratory infections, skin infections, and digestive tract infections. China has taken a series of effective measures.
1. Strictly control the source of infection, including isolating patients, and prohibiting visits and interactions between patients. Patients' excrement should be thoroughly disinfected, and patients should be cremated or buried deep when they die. Eliminate animal infection sources and carry out patriotic health campaigns for rat prevention and control.
2. Cut off the transmission route
(1) Eliminate flea patients' bodies and clothing, and spray them with safe and effective pesticides to kill fleas, and spray them on cats, dogs, livestock, etc.
(2) Strengthen transportation and border quarantine. Strict border sanitation quarantine for foreign ships, vehicles, aircraft, etc. from the epidemic source, implement rat and flea disinfection, and isolate and inspect passengers.
3. Protect susceptible persons
(1) Protect contacts from fleas when they are popular, pay attention to killing fleas, and take medicine.
(2) Prevention and vaccination.
(3) Medical personnel protect personal protection of medical personnel entering the epidemic area. They must be vaccinated with bacteria and can enter the epidemic area after two weeks. You must wear protective clothing, masks, hats, gloves, glasses, rubber shoes and isolation clothes when working.
Judging from the current trend, isolation is a very effective means to prevent the spread of the epidemic. According to the latest data from the WHO, the epidemic in China peaked and stabilized between January 23 and February 2, and has been declining steadily since then. "China-WHO Joint Expert Inspection Team on the New Coronavirus Pneumonia" foreign leader Bruce Ailward said in Beijing on the 24th that within two weeks, the number of new confirmed cases in China has dropped significantly (80%). For this result, the Chinese have made great sacrifices and adopted strict measures such as traffic control and home isolation to achieve it.
Faced with the brand new novel coronavirus, he clearly told the world that China has taken a bold approach, and Italy is also imitating it. We want to tell the world that we should do it like China! China's method is the only way we know and proven successful at present. China's method is to use whatever you have without medicine or vaccines, adjust, adapt and save lives as needed.
He also said that he saw the Chinese people united in response to the epidemic and showed a strong sense of cohesion and responsibility. He thanked China for teaching its experience in responding to the epidemic and said that the world knows and remembers these Chinese people.
United Nations Secretary-General Guterres 2 at the World Health Organization's headquarters in Geneva on February 24, also highly praised the strong actions taken by the Chinese people to mitigate the impact of the new crown pneumonia epidemic as much as possible.
From the current situation, while the number of new confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in China continues to decline, the number of new cases in Japan, South Korea, , Iran, , Italy and other places is increasing. The WHO also reminds "the possibility of the new coronavirus epidemic spreading in some countries with unstable health systems."
Many people have had the little wish to save the world like Iron Man and Spider-Man since childhood. In fact, you are already doing this. Washing hands frequently, wearing masks, isolating well, and fighting the epidemic together is saving all mankind.
