
China News Service, Seoul, November 17 (Reporter Liu Xu) China News Service reporters learned on the 17th local time that Korean Air President Yu Jihong, Hyundai Motor President Shin Jae-won, Hyundai Construction President Yoon Young-jun, Incheon International Airport Commune President Kim Jing-wook and South Korea Telecom President Park Jong-wook jointly signed a cooperation agreement for the Korean Urban Air Transportation System (K-UAM, Korea-Urban Air Mobility) in Seoul on the 16th to jointly build a South Korean urban air transportation industry ecosystem.
According to the cooperation agreement, the five companies will undertake development work in their respective fields of expertise. With experience accumulated in air transportation and the development and maintenance of manned and drones, Korean Air will be responsible for developing UAM operation control systems, developing traffic management concepts from the perspective of operators, and studying the business model of passenger and logistics transportation services. Hyundai Motor will be responsible for the research and development and commercialization of UAM aircraft, and will be responsible for the verification and test flight of the aircraft. Modern Construction will be responsible for the design and construction of UAM vertical take-off and landing facilities (Vertiport), and will also be responsible for the development of air-land transportation hub design and commercial operation plans. Incheon International Airport Commune will be responsible for the research on UAM infrastructure construction and air traffic management operation concepts. South Korea Telecom will be responsible for the construction of UAM-related communication infrastructure and data platforms, as well as the development of mobile communication solutions and air traffic management systems.
As a next-generation urban air traffic solution to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce environmental pollution, UAM has attracted much attention from all walks of life. By 2040, the global UAM market size is expected to reach US$110 billion. The South Korean government established the South Korean UAM team in June 2020 to guide enterprises and governments to cooperate to jointly promote the research and development and implementation of South Korean UAM solutions.
According to reports, as a member of the South Korean UAM team, Korean Air will cooperate with experts in various fields to jointly build the South Korean UAM ecosystem. While designing a business model suitable for the domestic environment of South Korea, we actively build flight, control and traffic management systems to provide comprehensive flight services to the public and create urban air channels.
