---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 12.9-inch larger-size iPad Pro is indeed "close to" the thin and light laptops in terms of product form - the design of the thin and light body + narrow bezel is the design language of many flagship thin and light laptops.
But if you want to become a "computer killer", it is far from enough to have an appearance alone. Interactive experience and hardware configuration are also crucial. In response to the first rigid threshold, Apple first equipped iPad Pro with iPadOS and Magic Control Keyboard with Trackpad. As for the second threshold, this question is even simpler - isn’t it just to require the performance of the laptop? I just pack a laptop with M1 chip , won’t it be better if I just pack it up.
so, in 2021, we finally waited for the iPad Pro that uses the M1 chip.
All pictures in the article except the running score screenshots are taken directly on iPad Pro screenshots, not iPad Pro screenshots.
performance is undoubtedly
Actually, there is really no need to give M1 iPad Pro scores. On the one hand, we all know how strong the performance of the M1 chip is - the unique resource calling architecture and general memory allow M1 to surpass , Core i9 in some special tests. But on the other hand, even if M1 has abundant excess performance, its performance needs to be reflected by the help of software load. At this stage, most iPadOS software is still developed based on A12Z or A14 chips.
In other words, an iPad Pro equipped with M1 is like a PS5 equipped with a brand new architecture and ultra-high-speed hard drive: in software with specially adapted, the new hardware can fully utilize the advantages of hardware to show powerful hardware performance. But if you are using software developed by the previous generation of hardware, there is no essential difference between the experiences of the two except that the hard disk loads faster and the game frame rate is slightly higher.
Besides, the reason why we think M1 Mac is a computer is that it has no direct connection with its ARM or X86 architecture. We admit that the M1 Mac is a computer because the M1 Mac can run computer-side software, which is one of the reasons why the Surface RT was nailed to the Microsoft shame pillar by angry users.
Even if iPad Pro 2021 has the same chip as Mac, it can only run the mobile software in the AppStore. However, Macs that also use M1 chips can use both mobile and desktop software at the same time, which is obvious at a glance. Moreover, Macs have better cooling performance and higher cost performance. If you are interested in the performance of iPad Pro 2021, I really recommend that you consider a Mac with an M1 chip, which would be a wiser approach. Buying an iPad Pro for performance is not worth it.
screen opens a new era
Since the M1 chip is not the focus of iPad Pro 2021, the starting price of iPad Pro 12.9-inch models should be the 12.9-inch mini-LED screen that supports the 8,499 yuan starting price of iPad Pro should be the 12.9-inch mini-LED screen. What is mini-LED? Simply put, mini-LED is a technology that realizes fine and controllable screen backlight.
Generally speaking, the common backlight technologies in mobile products (OLED does not require independent backlight) include side light, direct-down type, and partition backlight. Side light is actually the backlight technology used by the early Kindle Paper White - using a few lamp beads to illuminate the uniform light plate from the side. The advantage is that it is cheap, the disadvantage is that the brightness is not high, and spotlight-shaped shadows are easily visible on one side with lamp beads. It’s much easier to go straight down: first use a large number of lamp beads to form a lighting matrix, then cover it with a uniform light plate and uniform light film, and end. Compared with side light, the screen brightness of the direct-down type will be higher due to the increase in the number of lamp beads and light guide efficiency. But the disadvantages are also obvious. The entire uniform light plate needs to advance and retreat together, and be both bright and dark. Just as most projectors cannot present black, the "black part" in the screen with a direct-down backlight is also shining, so it cannot present black like OLEDs.
partition backlight is a little more complicated, it will control the light beads with straight backlight. Because the lamp beads in the low brightness area can be turned off, the partitioned backlight can achieve OLED-like black. But the problem is that the partition of the screen is limited, and the lamp beads are also limited in size. Partition backlights that are not well-educated often make the screen white and black, and the appearance is even worse than the top-level straight-down style that does not leak light.
and mini-LED are actually very small partition backlights. However, quantitative change causes qualitative change. Because the iPad Pro 12.9” has enough mini-LED backlight partitions, the iPad Pro 12.9” can control the screen backlight with extremely flexible flexibility, thus presenting an extremely deep black like OLED. At the same time, iPad Pro12.9” can also present extremely bright white with mini-LED. To put it in an exaggerated way, iPad Pro 12.9” is like a Dolby Cinema that can be placed on its legs.
For example, in the universal film in the backlight test - Aichi Prefecture Fireworks Competition Conference, the fireworks blooming in the night sky showed a very high contrast with the theoretically "infinite black" night sky: on one side, the brightness is directly filled with white, and on the other side, the pure black is no different from the dark room. As for the iPad Pro I got this time, even if I watched the video with nearly 50% screen brightness in a room where I couldn't see my fingers, there was no blue halo like the Pro XDR around the highlights.
If the brightness is adjusted to 100%, when looking directly at the screen, we can feel a faint blue halo around the highlights. If the extreme angle is shot and the 5EV exposure is increased later, the blue halo will be more obvious, but the black far away from the brightness of the picture still maintains a perfect black like Dolby Cinema.
Don’t forget, this is the halo that can only be seen in a special scene. At normal office brightness, it is almost impossible to see such a halo.
though I'm not stingy with iPad Pro The 12.9" screen praises, but this screen also has its own shortcomings. The edge shadow that was widely criticized some time ago is one of them. This problem is also very simple to explain. To put it simply, it is simplified: a pixel point in the center of the screen is illuminated by a full circle of mini-LEDs below and below, but the pixels at the edge of the screen can only be illuminated by a half circle of mini-LEDs below and below, so there will naturally be shadows.
If you want to solve this problem, Apple can find a way to compress the volume of mini-LED and extend the mini-LED matrix outside the display area in a COF package to make up for the edge brightness. If you are particularly concerned about this and really need a 12.9-inch screen, then it is better to consider the 2020 iPad Pro. But if you weigh the screen brightness and contrast can temporarily forget the existence of screen shadows, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is obviously more suitable for you.
outside of the screen
In my previous evaluation of 11" iPad Pro, I said, "11.9-inch is the shortcoming of iPad Pro." Indeed, the 11.9” keyboard is too small, and only a 12.9” keyboard can bring an input experience similar to a laptop. But after really using the large-size iPad Pro for a long time, I began to think that a 12.9" screen may not be a good idea.
First of all, a larger body means greater weight. If the iPad Pro 11.9" and the 468g weight is still portable, the 12.9" and the 682g weight is another concept. The weight of nearly 700g makes the 12.9" iPad Pro no longer a portable device in the traditional sense - yes, you can indeed take it out, but believe me, you will definitely want to use it if you sit down and have your arms. When I used 11.9” before, I still used Apple Pencil with one hand, but when I was facing the 12.9” iPad Pro, I wanted to put it on the table.
As an example, you can take a bottle of 500ml of coke while walking, no problem. But if you want to hold two cans of 330ml of coke in one hand for half an hour, I believe no one will be happy.
In addition to this, the price is also something we need to pay attention to. Since we are going to compete on the same stage with our computers, the 256GB SSD obviously cannot be eliminated.A 256GB 12.9” iPad Pro starts at 9299 (cellular version 10499), plus the cheapest double-sided keyboard, and a 10857-plus keyboard, and a 11998-plus-powered keyboard. This price is enough to buy three Windows laptops worth around 4,000 yuan. There is no problem with one in the company, home, and bag.
Even compared with the same price MacBook Air, MacBook Air has advantages in weight and software ecology. If you don’t have a rigid demand for touch screens, one MacBook plus one Mac mini will obviously be a better choice. But then again, mini-LED has indeed left a very deep impression on me. If Apple can find a way to stuff this screen into the 11-inch iPad Pro next year, then nothing else, "I will take the lead in charge."
