In recent years, with the continuous increase in people's health awareness, there are many people who found thyroid nodules during physical examinations. When searching online, we often find different statements. Some people say that surgery should be done in time, because even the smallest thyroid cancer is also cancer; some people say that there is no need to rush surgery, after all, the survival rate of thyroid cancer is very high, and surgery will affect the quality of life.
So, does it matter if the thyroid nodules are? How far is it from thyroid cancer?
Today, we specially invited Wu Yijun, the most popular team leader of the "2018 Zhejiang People Trusted Excellent Oncology Team·Thyroid Cancer", and the director of the Thyroid Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, to visit the "Zhejiang Medical Online" live broadcast room to talk about the thyroid gland with everyone.
Don't be deceived by the kind cloak of thyroid cancer
This surgery should be done in time
"One thing, I would like to emphasize in particular-don't think that thyroid cancer is early cancer and easy to treat. It is not uncommon for patients with local and advanced thyroid cancer to invade the nerves in clinical practice, resulting in hoarseness." Director Wu Yijun said that although in general, most citizens are actively diagnosed and treated in the face of thyroid cancer, many people also despise thyroid cancer, or do not choose the right treatment method, resulting in a bad outcome.
Never be deceived by the kind cloak of thyroid cancer. Director Wu talked about two cases he felt quite regretful -
The first patient, in his early fifties, was in his prime, and he had always been in good health. In the words of his family, he said, "He can beat a tiger with his body." One day, he suddenly coughed up blood, and his family was worried and hurried to accompany him to the hospital. It turned out that there was a tumor in his endotracheal membrane. Due to limited local medical conditions, he was referred to Zhejiang University First Hospital.
"After further examination, we found that he was actually a patient with advanced thyroid cancer. The tumor invaded the esophagus and compressed the trachea, causing sputum and blood coughing up. It is recommended to operate, otherwise he would be in danger of life at any time." Director Wu said, "Just while the family was hesitating whether to have surgery, his condition suddenly worsened and he died of heavy bleeding that night." After asking about the medical history, Director Wu found that he had never had a physical examination because of his health. It was not until the onset that time that he knew that he had thyroid cancer, but it was too late.
The second patient is a young girl, in her early thirties. "A tall and thin girl, very beautiful." Director Wu said that she went to a hospital near her home for a lump because she touched a lymph node, , and found that her lymph nodes were metastasized by thyroid cancer.
"Why are you here now? Didn't you notice it before?" As soon as Director Wu asked, the little girl almost burst into tears. She told Director Wu with a serious expression that she had discovered this tumor two years ago, but she didn't expect it to be progressing so quickly, which was different from what she expected.
It turned out that two years ago, the girl found a thyroid nodule about 1 cm on the left thyroid gland during a physical examination. The puncture result was confirmed to be papillary thyroid cancer . The doctor recommended surgery for the first visit. Just as she was hesitating whether to have surgery, her friends around her told her that there is nothing to be afraid of thyroid cancer. It is a tumor that is progressing very slowly, and it doesn’t matter if it takes a few years later. Since she was not married and had children at that time, and was afraid of surgery, she wanted to let go first.
Who knew that after two years, the tumor not only doubled (2 cm), but also metastasized to the lymph nodes.
At present, the little girl has undergone radical thyroid cancer surgery and has been discharged from the hospital successfully. However, Director Wu said that compared with those patients with in situ carcinoma with a tumor within 1 cm, the chance of her recurrence after surgery will be greatly increased, and if she had undergone surgery two years ago, the results would be very different.

Director Wu Yijun "Zhejiang Medical Online" Q&A
" Regarding thyroid nodules, we specifically refer to a scattered lesion formed by the abnormal growth of thyroid cells in local areas. When the hand can be touched and the B-ultrasound is also confirmed, we call it thyroid nodules, which are more common in women, and the incidence ratio between women and men is about 3:1, which may be related to the difference in estrogen and progesterone in the body between men and women.
