Hernan Bass: Choose your own adventure

Under Hernan Bass' brush, a thin young boy between adolescence and adulthood is the absolute protagonist. They are in a scene that is either treacherous, chaotic, dazzling or gorgeous, or meditating alone or staring at the painting, combining the loneliness of contemporary young people and the poetic decadence of 19th-century playboys. The exhibition has selected more than 20 paintings, showing the American artist's artistic practice from 2003 to 2021. The solo exhibition title "Choose Your Own Adventure" quotes the title of the American children's book series that was widely popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Its philosophy is to allow readers to "actively participate in the story, imagine themselves becoming the protagonist in the book, and choose the character identity and narrative direction. Bass was deeply influenced by this set of books in his childhood, so it is no wonder that his paintings also hide the meaning of a certain "growth novel". He once said: "Overall, adventure stories and adventure spirit are part of my work, and are closely related to my love for the book "Choose Your Own Adventure"... This is related to my interest in terrible and unfathomable things, all intertwined in my works."
From the works on display, we can see the changes in Bath's painting style over the past 20 years. In his early works, the surreal landscape that blends abstract expressions and decorative patterns almost swallows the characters. In recent years, works (especially new works created from 2020 to 2021) tend to use characters as the main body of the picture, and use delicate brushstrokes and realistic background to depict scenes full of dramatic tension and even slightly magical colors. In the 2020 "Popcorn Necklace", a boy in black leans against the dead tree on the coast, playing with the popcorn necklace on his chest, looking down on the king on the throne. The sunset behind him dyes the sky orange-red, placing him with a magnificent halo. However, popcorn and luxurious necklaces were incompatible, and the seagulls flying around seemed to be coveting them, with their sharp beaks pointing directly at the boy. The tension of a certain balance is about to be broken makes this painting extremely interesting.

Ginseng Fruit

"Ginseng Fruit" photography project is inspired by Zhou Xun . "Living in a bubble, every move is seen, but I feel that I am isolated from the world." To this end, she cooperated with Liu Xiangcheng, founder of the Shanghai Photo Art Center and photographer, to launch the "Ginseng Fruit" project, aiming to "retrieve yourself" and observe and record those who support and influence themselves in photography. "Ginseng Fruit" means a fruit on earth full of spirituality and nutrition, which goes through the complete process from sowing to harvest, just like everyone's long life journey, rich and unique. In addition to Zhou Xun, the project also invited Bi Gan , Chen Kun , Dou Jingtong , Huang Jue and Maizi, Jiang Wen and Zhou Yun , Liu Haoran , Ouyang Nana , Shu Qi to participate in photography creation. At the same time, Liu Xiangcheng also recorded their behind-the-scenes stories. After launching this project, Zhou Xun returned to his hometown Quzhou and took pictures of the warm time of reunion with his childhood friends. In front of the old classmates, the well-known actress had no star airs at all. In the green mountains and fields, she jokingly raised her head and closed her eyes, and received the "shutter-free baptism" from her friends who were surrounding her. Then she became Liu Haoran's subject at the Song Art Museum in Beijing, who regarded her as her favorite and respected senior actor. The most artistic work in the exhibition is the silhouette of his mother photographed by Bi Gan.With just one photo, the audience can feel the director's super control over the picture, the relationship between objects and characters.
Alex Israel: The Road to Freedom

This is the first gallery-level exhibition of the American artist Alex Israel from Los Angeles in China. Through multiple series of representative works including images, paintings, sculptures, interviews, and installations, it shows the artist's love for regional elements in Los Angeles, as well as his unique insights into concepts such as mass media and pop culture. Isrell regards Los Angeles as the center for understanding American culture and the American dream, and uses artistic practice to explore the social significance of popular culture, Hollywood and celebrity worship. Isrell's "Self-Portrait" series is exhibited on the second floor of the exhibition hall of

On the canvas of the silhouette on the side of the artist, the sunset on Palm Avenue, the skateboard boy in the sunshine of California , and even the artist himself turned into a character in Disney cartoons to read story books for the little animals in the forest. The third floor of the exhibition hall displays a colorful "wave" series, an abstract gradient neon spray paint "untitled" series, and sculptures and installations that refer to the landscape scenery of Southern California. Finally, the audience will watch the interview program "As It LAys Let the Way" produced by Isrell since 2011 on the first floor of the exhibition hall. In the show, Isrell randomly draws the card questions to the Los Angeles celebrity interviewed. These questions are either serious or absurd or sharp. Regardless of the guests' reaction, Isrell stopped asking and jumped directly to the next question, thereby arousing people's reflection on celebrity worship.
Paris Architecture 1948-2020: Witness of the Urban Process

As we all know, during the 19th century , during the 19th century, Ottoman presided over the Paris reconstruction plan that was well-reputed and now seems to be extraordinary. He seized land and demolished buildings in dense urban areas, planned spacious avenues as Paris traffic arteries, and strictly defined the height and form of buildings on both sides of the road. This transformation plan laid the foundation for our impression of the Paris cityscape today. For the city of Paris, the end of World War II was another turning point - although Paris's urban areas and monuments survived during World War II, after the end of the war, Paris faced a situation where industrial facilities were in ruins and housing and infrastructure needed to be improved urgently. "Paris Architecture 1948-2020: A Witness of the Urban Process" systematically introduces the audience to the Paris architecture that has been completed in the past 70 years, and tells the story of how Paris expanded into Paris Grand after the war.
This exhibition is a special exhibition of the West Coast Art Museum and the Pompidou Center Five-Year Exhibition Cooperation Project. The 75 projects in the exhibition are from Pompidou's architectural collections, including sketches, first drafts, drawings, models, interview videos, etc. It is the first time that the Pompidou Center architectural collection has been presented in China on a large scale. "Moon wrapped in Kraft " is a specific field exhibition jointly conceived by the Swedish artist group Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg. The exhibition title pays tribute to the poem "Valentine's Day" by British poet Carol Ann Duffy. The two artists have collaborated since 2004, and Djurberg has opened a film style based on charcoal and clay stop-motion animation, and Berg is responsible for creating an atmosphere-friendly soundtrack for his films and installations. Their works have an indescribable absurdity, the dialogue and storyline are almost logical, and the boundaries between humans, animals and monsters are blurred. Yang Beichen, curator and art critic, said: "Monsters dominate the world of Djurberg and Berg. This is a carnival-like world with a mad rhythm, where viewers need to face various challenging scenes and narratives, but they are not really unfamiliar. Xu Bing : Art Carmen Line

"Carmen Line" is considered to be the dividing line between outer space and the earth's atmosphere. In this exhibition, artist Xu Bing created a space art scene. He printed the basic elements of his representative work " Tianshu " on the surface of a rocket's arrow, named after "Xu Bing Tianshu No.", and launched the rocket in Jiuquan, China on February 1, 2021. "Xu Bing Tianshu No" has installed a 5.5cm cube "Tianshu Rubik's Cube". According to the plan, the satellite will be transmitted back to the real-time image of the Rubik's Cube in outer space. After completing the propulsion mission, the child-level arrow separated from the load compartment and landed back on the surface. These words of the Book of Heaven also experienced the process of going to heaven and earth with the rocket. Through a large number of text, pictures, video materials, artistic works and a sorting out the history of space art, the
exhibition explores the fate of this "art rocket", as well as the cross-practice of contemporary art and space, the misunderstandings of earth civilization, and who has the right to use space resources. As Xu Bing said: "The definition of this project is like what 'contemporary art' is, and it is also difficult to define. Extending artistic tentacles into outer space, solving the problems on the earth, and exploring the limitations of people. What we ultimately seek is a new and effective philosophical view."

American artist Cindy Sherman is famous for his unique selfies. Since the 1970s, she has been exploring the construction of identity, dressing herself up as a young Hollywood movie star (Untitled Movie Stills, 1977-1980; Projection Behind the Screen, 1980), a historical figure in classical works (Historical Portraits, 1989-1990), a clown (Joker, 2003-2004), or a man (Man, 2019-2020). There are many very charming characters, but more of them show the weird side, pointing to the quirky and ugly human nature, thus attracting attention to certain stereotypes.
Portraits of Cindy Sherman are often at the intersection of reality and fantasy. This exhibition is a review of Chinese contemporary art in the past thirty years. The 13 artists participating in the exhibition, such as Fang Lijun, , Yue Minjun, Chen Shaoxiong, , Xiao Lu, etc., are all representative figures of this period. Their works reflect how art reflects historical circumstances.
In the past 30 years, Chinese contemporary art has flourished and has received attention and recognition worldwide. On the other hand, as a sociological practice, the evolution of contemporary art also reflects the changes in the social environment. Environmental factors such as modernization, urbanization, and market economy, may be alternately carried out, or parallel movements, or even interfere with each other, and they have all become topics of artistic creation. Collectivism and individualism, realism and utopian thought coexisted during this period, and they appeared repeatedly in the artist's works in various concrete forms, showing their thoughts and expressions of survival.
