Suzhou University Library is derived from the "Soochow Wu University Hall Library". It was officially opened on March 8, 1901 at the old house of Boxi Academy, Tiancizhuang, Suzhou. In 1903, the library moved to a large room in the southeast of the second floor of Lintang. In 1913, it moved to Room 206, North North of the second floor of Sun Hall. In 1906, there were 3,500 Chinese books and 350 Western books. In the rising "New Library Movement", Soochow University Library learned the advanced management and service concepts of European and American libraries, established the Western Languages and Chinese Languages Department, and adopted the Dewey Decimal Classification Method. By 1926, the library had been expanded and developed several times and became a famous university library at that time. In 1935, the Soochow University Headquarters Library had a collection of about 40,000 books and the Law School Library had a collection of more than 30,000 books, ranking third in the provincial university libraries and ranked among the top universities in the country.
After the founding of New China, the national departments were adjusted in 1952, and Jiangsu Normal University was established based on some departments of Soochow University, Jiangsu Normal University and other institutions, and the library was renamed Jiangsu Normal University Library. At that time, there were 7 staff members and 230,000 books, and an independent building of 1,940 square meters was built in the south of the original campus of Soochow University.
