According to social media news, Tesla plans to add two new batteries to the Model 3 and Model Y of the rear-wheel drive version, namely the iron phosphate lithium blade battery and Model 3 Performance battery produced by BYD, with the battery capacity increased to 70 kWh.
all-wheel drive version and high-performance versions of Model 3 and Model Y are planned to be upgraded to 4680 batteries. The specific battery capacity specifications are still unknown.
According to foreign media reports, the current battery capacity of Tesla's rear-wheel drive versions of Model 3 and Model Y is 50 kWh and 55 kWh respectively. If upgraded to 70 kWh, the range will be greatly improved.
Tesla Texas Super Factory and Berlin Super Factory are already producing Model Y equipped with 4680 batteries. If the all-wheel drive version and high-performance versions of Model 3 and Model Y are upgraded, it will be fully adopted worldwide and will not be limited to these two super factories.
Although there is only news on social media that Tesla will upgrade the batteries of Model 3 and Model Y next year, and there is no mention of when to upgrade next year, but the news of using 4680 batteries and BYD blade batteries has appeared before, and it is not surprising to use these two types of batteries in the future.
Last month, there was a report that BYD has begun supplying blade batteries for Tesla's Berlin Super Factory, and related models have also been approved by EU and are expected to be offline at the end of August or early September.
4680 battery was launched by Tesla at the Battery Day event in September 2020. It has higher energy density and greater output power. In addition to Tesla, manufacturers such as Panasonic , LG New Energy are also studying this battery and preparing for production. Two years after the announcement, Tesla's large-scale adoption of this battery is also expected.
