(I) General Questions
When the direct quotation is a general question, after being converted into an indirect quotation, the content of the quotation part must be connected by whether or if. For example:
Jason said to Kate, 'Are you going there on foot?'
Jason asked Kate whether/if she was going there on foot.
Jason said to Kate, 'Did you see the film last night?'
Jason asked Kate whether/if she had seen the film the night before.
And for example:
Jason said to Kate, 'Have you ever been to Paris?'
Jason asked Kate whether/if she had ever been to Paris.

. The said to in the main sentence should be changed to asked;
. Or not can be added at the end of the sentence guided by whether/if. The sentences guided by
. Whether/if must be declarative and cannot be reversed.
(II) Special question
When the direct quote is a special question , after it is converted into an indirect quote, the content of the quotation part is connected by the special question words in the direct quote. For example:
Jason said to Kate, 'How are you going there?'
Jason asked Kate how she was going there.
And for example:
Jason said to Kate, 'What did you do last night?'
Jason asked Kate what she had done the night before.
And for example:
Jason said to Kate, 'How many times have you been to Paris?'
Jason asked Kate how many times she had been to Paris.

. The said to in the main sentence should be changed to asked;
. The sentences guided by special question words must be in declarative sentence order and cannot be reversed.
(III) Pay attention to
. When converting direct quotations into indirect quotations, pay attention to the three principles of personal change, tense change and sentence pattern change should be used simultaneously;
