In 1950, Lieutenant General Zhang Zhi brought his family and several representatives to a small western-style building in South China Sea . He came with a mission. The next day, he would meet with Jiang Ching-kuo and discuss matters with Jiang Ching-kuo about Taiwan.
If things go well, it may be able to promote peaceful liberation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. This is what Zhang Zhizhong hopes most, so even with the risk, Zhang Zhizhong still came without hesitation.
Unexpectedly, at two o'clock in the morning, the phone ringing suddenly rang, and Zhang Zhizhong was awakened from his sleep and answered the phone in a daze. Marshal Ye Jianying's anxious voice came from the opposite side of
: "Retreat quickly! Your location is exposed, Taiwan has sent bombers!"
Ye Jianying
This time, he scared Zhang Zhizhong to wake up. He quickly put on his clothes and got out of bed, woke everyone in the building to evacuate. Everyone hurriedly ran to the hidden place to hide.
When it was dawn in the morning, a bomber flew in the direction of Taiwan Strait , and accurately dropped several bombs in the small western-style building.
In an instant, the fire was raging, and the small foreign building gradually collapsed in the fire. Zhang Zhizhong watched the bombing from a distance, feeling lingering fear. If Ye Jianying hadn't reminded him in time, his family would have become the souls of the island at this time.
However, it is clear that Chiang Ching-kuo agreed to the negotiations, why did he go back on his word, and privately inquire about Zhang Zhizhong's location, and sent bombers to kill them all? This incident involves many years of conflict between Zhang Zhizhong and Chiang Kai-shek.
Jiang Jingguo
Peace General
Zhang Zhizhong has always been called "Peace General". He has made a lot of contributions to the great cause of reunification of the motherland. Moreover, although he is a general of the Kuomintang, he also silently helped the Communist Party do many things in the face of the overall situation of the country. In many historical events, we can see Zhang Zhizhong.
But the more Zhang Zhizhong understood the righteousness so deeply, the more he was not tolerated by Chiang Kai-shek, because Chiang Kai-shek was essentially an autocrat and he did not allow anyone to infringe on his rights. In Chiang Kai-shek's view, all the efforts made by Zhang Zhizhong for peace were against him, so Chiang Kai-shek had long had the idea of getting rid of Zhang Zhizhong.
Chiang Kai-shek expressed his dissatisfaction with Zhang Zhizhong for the first time after the southern Anhui Incident.
At that time, Zhang Zhizhong was very shocked to learn about this because Zhang Zhizhong firmly supported the cooperation between the two parties. When he learned that Chiang Kai-shek had taken action against his own people, Zhang Zhizhong was very dissatisfied with him, and was afraid that this would lead to the breakdown of cooperation between the two parties.
So he wrote a letter of ten thousand words overnight to Chiang Kai-shek, hoping that for the sake of the overall situation, he would quickly apologize to the Communist Party and release the Communist Party members captured during the Southern Anhui Incident, otherwise it would be too late to regret it if it would cause a disaster in the future.
Chiang Kai-shek met Zhang Zhizhong for this matter. During the conversation, Chiang Kai-shek was very unhappy. After the conversation, he neglected Zhang Zhizhong for a long time and refused to give him a position.
But a few months later, Chiang Kai-shek had to invite Zhang Zhizhong back, because after the Southern Anhui Incident, the relationship between the two parties deteriorated rapidly, the cause of the War of Resistance was seriously hindered, and Chiang Kai-shek was also in danger.
During this negotiation, Zhang Zhizhong met with Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou and others many times, and the two sides formed a deep friendship. Premier Zhou had a deep friendship with Zhang Zhizhong in the past. When Premier Zhou and Deng Yingchao got married, it was Zhang Zhizhong who paid for them. After so many years, the two have been in two opposing camps, but Zhang Zhizhong has always been open-minded and considers the overall situation and the country.
Therefore, Premier Zhou believes that although the Kuomintang is corrupt and degenerate, Zhang Zhizhong is still an open and honest gentleman. It’s a pity that because of a guy like Chiang Kai-shek who is dragging his feet, even though Zhang Zhi’s center wanted to promote peace, the matter was not settled for a long time.
Deeply understand the great hierarchy
It was not until the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan in 1945 that Chiang Kai-shek decided to negotiate in Chongqing, but his essential intention was not to be peaceful, but to make excuses to launch a civil war in .
Whether it is Zhang Zhizhong, Premier Zhou and Chairman Mao, they are uneasy about the security issues of this trip. But even though there is a dragon's nest in front of you, Chairman Mao decided to take this trip for future peace and great cause. When Zhang Zhizhong learned that Chairman Mao was really coming to Chongqing, he admired Chairman Mao's courage very much.
At the same time, Chiang Kai-shek also issued an order to Zhang Zhizhong to welcome Chairman Mao, doing so to eliminate the vigilance of Yan'an. Zhang Zhizhong was very worried on the way to greet him, but he soon thought of a countermeasure.
After receiving Chairman Mao and his group, Zhang Zhizhong told Premier Zhou: He has packed up his residence Guiyuan and let Chairman Mao move in.
After Chairman Mao lived at Zhang Zhizhong's house, Zhang Zhizhong began to take full responsibility for Chairman Mao's safety. He separated the military police team that originally protected him and guarded Chairman Mao day and night. Zhang Zhizhong also gave them a death order: Any suspicious people appearing around him can be shot immediately without taking Chiang Kai-shek into consideration.
Later Chongqing negotiation atmosphere is very stiff because Chiang Kai-shek did not want the negotiation to be completed at all. Zhang Zhizhong saw it and was anxious in his heart. Although the negotiation was not expected, if this continued, Chairman Mao’s safety would be threatened.
For this reason, Zhang Zhizhong had to go to Chiang Kai-shek's office in person, asking him to promote negotiations as soon as possible, and ask Chairman Mao to return to Yan'an.
Of course, Zhang Zhizhong's request was undoubtedly rejected, but being able to speak up and stand up at such a moment is enough to see Zhang Zhizhong's profound understanding of the righteousness.
Chiang Kai-shek's attitude here was unpredictable, so Zhang Zhizhong had to continue running for this. He united a large number of democrats to put pressure on Chiang Kai-shek to start renegotiation as soon as possible. Under heavy pressure from the outside world, Chiang Kai-shek had to sign the Double Ten Agreement with Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou, temporarily resolving the negotiations.
After the agreement came out, many people felt that peace was hopeful and felt that under the constraints of the agreement, Chiang Kai-shek did not dare to start a war easily, but people's ideas were still too naive. This agreement can be torn up at any time for Chiang Kai-shek. He doesn't care about the constraints of the agreement at all, but at least being able to sign this agreement is a big step in peace.
Soon, Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou decided to return to Yan'an, and Zhang Zhizhong personally gave them off. At that time, Zhang Zhizhong told Chairman Mao that he would still escort him back in person because Zhang Zhizhong knew Chiang Kai-shek very well. He believed that as long as Chairman Mao had not returned to Yan'an, danger could occur at any time.
When saying goodbye, Chairman Mao specifically thanked Zhang Zhizhong for his contributions during this period. If it were not for Zhang Zhizhong's hard work during this period, the agreement would not have been signed.
It’s a pity that everyone’s painstaking efforts are in vain under Chiang Kai-shek’s desire. Soon Chiang Kai-shek tore up the agreement and launched a civil war. Chiang Kai-shek's behavior angered Zhang Zhizhong. He did not expect Chiang Kai-shek to break everyone's expectations so quickly.
At this time, Zhang Zhizhong himself was in great danger. Chiang Kai-shek had completely lost trust in him. People knew about Chiang Kai-shek's methods, they were sinister and cruel, and desperate. Even if Zhang Zhizhong was a veteran of the Kuomintang, it would be easy if Chiang Kai-shek wanted to get rid of him.
At the same time, Zhang Zhizhong was also disappointed with Chiang Kai-shek. He believed that such a government was not worthy of his continued efforts. Therefore, after the outbreak of the civil war, Zhang Zhizhong resigned in anger and decided to devote himself to teaching and educating people for the rest of his life and no longer get involved in politics, unless the ruling group led by Chiang Kai-shek was completely defeated.
But maybe Zhang Zhizhong himself did not expect that the failure of the Kuomintang would come so quickly.
In the late period of the Liberation War, the Kuomintang suffered repeated defeats, and Chiang Kai-shek's prestige in the party was greatly affected. At this time, Li Zongren, joined forces with the Guangxi troops to seize power from Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang Kai-shek had no choice but to resign from his position as president, and Li Zongren became the acting president.
Of course, the power struggle within the government is still undercurrent. At this time, Li Zongren had the idea of peace talks, so he brought Zhang Zhizhong out and asked him to negotiate with the Communist Party.
Li Zongren
Although Zhang Zhizhong is tired of the National Government, he knows that he still has to go this trip. Premier Zhou and Zhang Zhizhong are very happy to meet again, and the two sides drafted a peace agreement. However, the results of this negotiation also failed because Chiang Kai-shek still had real power within the Kuomintang and he refused to sign the agreement.
Zhang Zhizhong was helpless about this, but Chiang Kai-shek's approach was not surprising either. After the negotiations failed, Zhang Zhizhong decided to go back and report, but Premier Zhou firmly stopped him.
Premier Zhou said to Zhang Zhizhong at that time: "When the Xi'an Incident , we were already sorry for a friend named Zhang. Now we can't let you down again, your friend named Zhang."
Another friend named Zhang mentioned by Premier Zhou was Zhang Xueliang , who had been under house arrest by Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang Kai-shek has always been ruthless to his opponents. Zhang Zhizhong has offended Chiang Kai-shek in many ways. At this moment, Chiang Kai-shek is at the end of his journey. If Zhang Zhizhong goes back at this time, he will definitely become Chiang Kai-shek's target of revenge.
Therefore, Premier Zhou refused to let Zhang Zhizhong go back. At the same time, in order to relieve Zhang Zhizhong, Premier Zhou decided to bring Zhang Zhizhong's family to Pei . Seeing that Premier Zhou had arranged everything for him, Zhang Zhizhong was also very moved. Moreover, since his family had arrived, there was no concern in Zhang Zhizhong.
So shortly after, Zhang Zhizhong made a public statement saying that he broke with the Kuomintang, and Zhang Zhizhong joined the people's camp.
The Great Cause of Unification
As a representative of democracy and peace, Zhang Zhizhong still made his own efforts for peace across the Taiwan Strait after liberation.
In 1950, Taiwan released a rumor, expressing its intention to negotiate and peaceful reunification. After hearing this news, our party believed that this negotiation could be done. Whether it is true or false, as long as they are willing to negotiate, it is a breakthrough, and Zhang Zhizhong is undoubtedly the one who is most suitable for this mission.
So Premier Zhou personally found Zhang Zhizhong and discussed this matter. When Zhang Zhizhong heard of this task, he had no choice but to express his willingness to set off immediately. At the same time, in order to prevent some people's destruction, although Zhang Zhizhong actually left for negotiation this time, the reason he came up with was to go to Hong Kong to pick up his daughter back to the mainland.
. During this negotiation, the person sent by Taiwan was Chiang Kai-shek's son Chiang Ching-kuo. At the same time, Chiang Ching-kuo was also the next leader of Taiwan, which people agreed. Zhang Zhizhong believed that Chiang Ching-kuo was not helpless, because in the past, there was some friendship between Zhang Zhizhong and Chiang Ching-kuo. He felt that Chiang Ching-kuo was not very bad compared to his father.
However, Chiang Ching-kuo's subsequent practices disappointed Zhang Zhizhong.
In order to show his sincerity, Zhang Zhizhong led his family to the vicinity of the South China Sea, but in the end he did not wait for the delegation from Taiwan, but instead waited for the bomber from Taiwan. The passionate Zhang Zhizhong could not be disappointed in the face of such a scene, but he still did not give up and continued to run for peace between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo
In 1959, Zhang Zhizhong made another public speech, saying that as long as the personnel of Taiwan are willing to seek peace, the mainland will welcome them at any time.
In 1960, Taiwan had a turmoil over Chiang Kai-shek's heir issue, and Chairman Mao found Zhang Zhizhong for discussion.Zhang Zhizhong believed that although Chiang Ching-kuo had gone back on his word in the past, no matter from which perspective, it would be better for Taiwan to fall into Chiang Ching-kuo's hands in the future than for others. At least the Chiang father and son dare not directly divide China into two, but if it were someone else, the situation in the future would be hard to say.
Therefore, in order to express support for Chiang Ching-kuo's succession, Chairman Mao secretly ordered Lieutenant Zhang Zhi to pass on the mainland's wishes in this regard to Taiwan. For many years, Zhang Zhizhong has always played the role of a messenger between the mainland and Taiwan, and many important news was transmitted between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait through Zhang Zhizhong's hands.
If there were no middleman Zhang Zhizhong, the relationship between mainland China and Taiwan would have been even more tense.
1969 On April 6, 79-year-old Zhang Zhizhong came to the end of his life, and the last words he left were still about Taiwan.
He said: "I can no longer serve Taiwan's return to the motherland. I have worked hard for peace between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party for the rest of my life. Under the correct leadership of Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou, I have also done these tasks well. However, it is my lifelong regret. Taiwan will return sooner or later, but I will not wait for that day."
failed to see Taiwan return, which became a lifelong regret for the peace general Zhang Zhizhong, but all his efforts have paved the way for future generations. When the moment of unification really comes, everyone will remember the contributions Zhang Zhizhong made in it. He did not see the results, but he will be one of the greatest heroes!
