"Don't compete for fields with grain or land with forests. Planting Chinese medicinal materials under the forest will not only benefit from leasing mountain farmers, but also have considerable ecological benefits in forestry. It is a good industry that takes into account both short-term, medium-term and long-term benefits." Xie Jian said that the forestry land area of Jianou City is 5.256 million mu, the forest area is 5.0305 million mu, and the forest coverage rate is 79.82%. The city is a low-mountain and hilly area with an altitude of 68 to 1,822 meters. It is a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest area. The area of stands suitable for the development of medicinal plants under the forest is 80,000 mu.
In order to promote the high-quality development of the forestry industry, increase the income of forestry farmers, and give full play to the important role of the forestry industry in rural revitalization, the Jianou Forestry Bureau has taken multiple measures to vigorously support forestry farmers to plant medicinal plants under forests. A survey of under-forest medicinal plants is carried out every year to lay a solid foundation for screening under-forest medicinal plant planting projects that year, and subsidize projects selected under-forest medicinal planting to a certain scale; guide and help owners find and rent mountain forests that can be used to develop under-forest medicinal planting, such as guiding the Yangming Planting Professional Cooperative to lease the land of the Jianou Forestry Experimental Forest Farm, plant 1,390 mu of Poria cocos in pine wood, plant 370 mu of planting in 2021, and plan to plant 1,020 mu of this year; actively connect with pharmaceutical companies, Jianou Shui Narcissus Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. uses Manshan White (Horse Fruit Rhododendron) as raw materials to produce Manshan White Compound Syrup and other products. The pharmaceutical company is now cooperating with Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University and Jianou Forestry Bureau to study artificial breeding and under-forest planting technologies in the mountains to change the current situation of maintaining production by relying on wild raw materials.

Technology is the primary productive force. Jianou City has taken multiple measures to send science and technology to the countryside, and held technical training on medicinal plant planting under the forest to help forest farmers solve the technical and management problems of medicinal plants under the forest, and has given birth to some forest farmers or new forestry business entities to establish typical demonstration bases for economical and efficient forests that are visible and tangible to farmers. Rongxue Family Forest Farm in Yushan Town operates a demonstration of planting Polygonatum under the forest for a demonstration. It also provides free Polygonatum seedlings and under the forest planting technical services to cone farmers, allowing them to plant Polygonatum under the cone forest. When harvested, the Rongxue Family Forest Farm ensures recycling at the market price at the time. The "family forest farm + farmers + base" model has been formed, and a new mechanism for the under-forest economy to drive farmers' income growth has been innovated. Now, 350 mu of this "order-based Polygonatum under the forest" have been planted. 1,000 mu are planned to be planted within this year, and 3,500 mu are planned to be planted in three years.
Plant medicinal materials under the forest and stroll out the road to prosperity. It is understood that this year, the area of Chinese herbal medicines such as Polygonatum, Seven-leafed One-branch flower, narrow-leaf Taiwanese banyan, Gentlebi, Dendrobium officinale, and Dendrobium officinale was planted under the forest in Jianou City, with an output value of 9.03 million yuan, bringing forest farmers an income of 3,000 yuan per mu.
