On July 30, the First Museum and the Beijing Grand Canal Museum held a press conference on the collection of cultural relics exhibits, including cultural relics exhibits related to Grand Canal historical culture, Beijing historical culture, urban development, etc. At the press conference, the well-known photographer, Mr. Liu Shizhao, donated to the Shoubo free of charge his old photos of the Grand Canal he took since 1981 - "The Flowing Epic, The Cycling Record of the Grand Canal in Beijing and Hangzhou".
Liu Shizhao rode twice in 1981 and 2016, riding from Beijing along the Grand Canal , recording the canal city along the 1980s, showing the changes in the canal over the past 35 years.

Photographer: When did the two cycling start and how long did it take?
Liu Shizhao: began in the summer of 1981, and it took four distances one after another, and finally arrived in Hangzhou in January 1983. It took more than 400 days.
In 2016, I rode directly from Beijing to Hangzhou.

On June 19, 1981, I left Beijing and started my journey to ride the Grand Canal. The picture shows passing by Tiananmen . The white clothes are Liu Shizhao, and the blue clothes are the text partner Shen Xingda .
Photographer: What photography equipment did you bring on two rides? How many photos were taken twice?
Liu Shizhao: The first time I brought three Leica , one M2, and two M3. The lenses are 37mm, 50mm, 90mm, 180mm, and 250mm. Three or five thousand films were taken.
The second time I brought three Sony , one a7r and two a7r2. The lens is 16-35mm, 85mm, 70-200mm. About 15,000 photos were sold.
Photographer: Why do you want to ride the Grand Canal in 1981?
Liu Shizhao: Foreign Language Bureau 's slogan was "Let the world understand China and let China go to the world." The magazine I worked for at that time mainly did external communication work.
Text reporter Shen Xingda reported this topic. Because few media had complete and detailed reports on the Grand Canal at that time, they passed this topic. I needed to go with the photojournalist at that time.
At that time, I rode a bicycle to and from get off work every day, and I had to play ball at noon. I asked me if I would like to go, and I agreed. In 1981, when I left, I was 33 years old, my writing partner was 44 years old, and he was in good health.

July 29, 1981, Hebei Iron Lion .
Photographer: What kind of mood did you start your first ride?
Liu Shizhao: feels that it is facing an unknown and challenging thing, but it is also quite interesting, and I am still very happy when I set off.
Photographer: Was this riding done in 1981 done in one go?
Liu Shizhao: We went out in segments. Because during the hottest period of summer, you are prone to heatstroke and cannot ride. Winter is desolate, and no one goes out and can’t take pictures of what they want.
On May 19, 1981, we first started an interview in Beijing. A month later (June 19), we set out from Beijing and started riding along the Grand Canal.

July 23, 1981, entered , Qingxian, Hebei. The journey after
is divided into 4 parts to walk. The first time I rode to Hebei and just entered Shandong. It was getting hot, and no one could stand it at that time. Later I came back to adjust and continued to ride in autumn. The second part I rode to Jining and came back as winter came. The third paragraph is from Jining to , Zhenjiang , summer is here. The fourth section, from Zhenjiang to Hangzhou, the terminal station.
Photographer: How did you set your cycling route at that time?
Liu Shizhao: We take the city along the canal as the point, and we "run on the spot" one stop at a time. Between points, we ride on national and provincial highways, and there are also county highways.
After we arrive in the city or village, we will ride "divergence" and go to many places that need interview. Especially in some big cities, they may stay for another half a month. We rode about 1,000 miles of canal.

1981, Beijing, the second gate Lions Club of Qingfeng Gate in Tonghui River.
Photographer: What preparations have you made for cycling?
Liu Shizhao: My partner and I were carrying more than 100 kilograms of luggage in the back seat of the car.
My partner did a very detailed desk work before leaving, searching materials in the library, planning interview content, etc. The paper of his handwritten materials was more than one meter high. He brought these materials and some luggage.
My photography equipment is about fifty kilograms, and the rest is some luggage.
Photographer: Why choose to ride a bicycle?
Liu Shizhao: was a world energy crisis at that time. We first hoped to be environmentally friendly; and another "rriving along the Grand Canal" interview was a novel and attracting readers. At that time, whenever we went to an interview place, many people found it incredible, "Two people rode here from Beijing to do interviews."
Photographer: What interesting stories are there in the process?
Liu Shizhao: is in Qing County, Hebei Province. After arriving there, I happened to catch up with the local market. That day, the road was full of people and cars couldn't move at all, so I wanted to go out and take some photos of the market.

1981, Xingji Town, Qingxian County, Hebei Province, Mule and Horse Market.
is being photographed, and someone is knocking on the goods on my bicycle with a stick, "Dangdangdang". I said, "What are you doing?" He said, "The policeman, and I said I am a reporter."
He said why are you taking photos here? I know, because I came out of the city on a new bike, tall with two cameras hanging on my body. When he thought about it, he immediately responded that it might be a foreigner. He was afraid that foreign spies would come here to take pictures.

1981, in Qing County, Hebei Province, a farmer who drove a ox cart.
I arrived at Qingxian for the second time, and I especially wanted to find this policeman. It's been 35 years, and that person may be in his sixties or seventies. I wanted to find this person, but there were no clues and the place had changed. I don’t know which police station it was.
This matter is quite interesting, the policeman is quite responsible.
Photographer: How far can I ride a day at that time?
Liu Shizhao: can ride up to 50 kilometers a day.
Photographer: Have you ever thought about giving up?
Liu Shizhao: I don’t want to do it after has not encountered difficulties, and I have to ride it down no matter what.
shooter: What kind of scene is it when you ride to the finish line for the first time?
Liu Shizhao: At that time, we two rode to Gongchen Bridge in Hangzhou. We said one thing: "Finally arrived!" Then we agreed: "How is it? Let's ride it again in 10 years!"

On December 25, 1982, we arrived at Gongchen Bridge, Hangzhou.
Photographer: When did you start wanting to run the Grand Canal again?
Liu Shizhao: When the Grand Canal was preparing to apply for World Heritage, I especially wanted to go there again. After retirement, I am preparing for my second ride. In 2016, I rode a city station wagon, the kind with "fine wheels".
This time, a friend drove with me because he wanted to bring a computer, a hard drive and other things. This bicycle is not a load-carrying car. If you ride it with computer hard drive , it will easily be damaged. My friend helped me carry these luggage.
This time I rode directly from Beijing to Hangzhou, and it took me 68 days.
shooter: This time you rode along the Grand Canal of Beijing and Hangzhou. Did the shooting content in each area be planned in advance or encountered by chance?
Liu Shizhao: Whatever wants to see is in my heart.
past Tongzhou logo, lamp relic tower. At that time, the trough boat could see the tower at a distance, and you could tell that you had arrived in Beijing when you saw the tower. Now in Tongzhou, Beijing’s sub-center, there are many high-rise buildings. Compared with a tower worth tens of meters and a building worth hundreds of meters, I want to take a comparison photo.

2016, Tongzhou District, Beijing, , as Tongzhou became the urban sub-center of Beijing, the lamp relic tower has lost its role as a landmark in terms of architectural height.
is in Zhangjiawan. When we went there (1981), there was a ditch called Guangou. The ravine is actually a dirt road, and the families living on both sides are living.
The people who went to Beijing to take the exam took a boat to Zhangjiawan and got off the boat, and lived at the homes of the people on both sides of Guangou. Then come to Beijing from here, ride a horse, sit in a sedan chair, ride a carriage, etc. So this place is called Guangou.
In 2016, I went to Zhangjiawan and asked where Guangou is? I don't know who I ask. It’s a pity that I didn’t find where Guangou was.

In 1981, in Zhangjiawan Town, Tong County, Beijing, Guangou was named after most of the candidates who went to Beijing to take the exam and then rush to the capital.
In Tianjin Hexiwu, I wanted to go and see the "big oil cake", which is very interesting. The one who frys the big oil cakes was a state-owned canteen on the side of the road at that time. One is about 80 cm, and it takes more than one pound of fried one. At that time, many laborers from the canal transport bought this food. This is the remains of the canal transport.
First of all, I checked online and there are different opinions on the existence of big oil cakes. After arriving there, I asked the hotel owner with the photo and learned that the person in the photo had passed away, and one of his relatives moved to the farmers' market to sell big oil cakes.
was found the next day, but it changed, and the way to eat it has changed. The oil cake is still that big, but it is fried thinly. It's like eating pancake fruit . It is changing, which is certain. The development of society and the changing and improving people's living standards.

I also want to take pictures of the night in Haihe, Tianjin. The past Haihe was dark at night. There are railings and cement piers, and there is a couple in love between each two piers. In the evening, on the banks of the Haihe River, these railings are occupied by those in love. At that time, there would be no place if I went late, and everyone was very conscious. There could only be one pair between the two trunks, and there would be no other pair to squeeze in, leaving space for people.
I especially want to see what the Haihe River looks like now. Now the Haihe River has become a tourist attraction with brilliant lights. Many of them are fishing, traveling, and taking photos. Those bridges are particularly beautifully built.

is in Hebei, such as Wuqiao , which is the hometown of acrobatics . When I went there (1981), I practiced acrobatics at my respective homes. At that time, in the village, they might just ask someone casually, "Do you know how to use acrobatics?" and they could give you some tricks. This time I went there, and I built an international acrobatics school and went international.

1981, in Wuqiao County, Hebei Province, almost every family and everyone in the countryside were able to use acrobatics.

2016, Wuqiao County, Hebei Province, Acrobatics School.
When I arrived in Shandong, I wanted to see the changes in the tomb of King Sulu of the Philippines. Are his descendants still guarding the tomb?

Photographer: What do you regret more?
Liu Shizhao: I want to see the most , Wuxi , Mi City, I was sorry.
m city structure is very interesting. There is a row of docks by the canal, separated by one by one, forming small docks for each family. There is a small road behind it, corresponding to the homes of the owners of various small wharfs. Their warehouse is here, and rice exists in the warehouse. If anyone wants to buy it, take it out from here to load it on the ship. Such a market is very interesting.

1982, fishing boats in the canal in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province.
Later, I rode my bicycle and hoped to find this place. When I got there, there was nothing and it turned into a green area. Then, a stone sign was erected with stones on the shore - "Wuxi Mishi Ruins" and turned into a ruin, which was particularly regrettable.
Wuxi's Qingmingqiao has not changed much, but the background has become a tall building.

1982, Qingmingqiao, Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province.

2016, Qingmingqiao, Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province.
So this comparison is sometimes quite interesting, with regrets, and some are very relieved.
Photographer: Is there anything impressive?
Liu Shizhao: For example, in Wuxi, many people climb to the top of the mountain at three or four o'clock every morning to exercise. This is still the case in 2016, and people’s living habits have not changed for more than 30 years.

Changzhou I am deeply impressed by this place and think it is very beautiful. I just thought, what was my photo taken around, it changed a lot here. The chairman of the local Photographers Association accompanied me for a long time but couldn't find it. In the end, they decided that it was probably in this place.

2016, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, the Grand Canal flows through the city.
Photographer: The two ridings were separated by 35 years. What is the biggest change along the Grand Canal you see?
Liu Shizhao: has long expected a great change, but this change is beyond my expectations and is very colorful. There are changes in every aspect. From the perspective of the landscape, there are changes, whether it is regret or comfort.
People's lives are changing. Especially when we walked south and arrived in Jiangsu, many fishermen used to have no houses on land, and their house was just a boat. Now it's basically on land. At that time, the children on the boat would tie a rope to the boat. They are working and cannot take care of their children.

and raft stations. The woods in Zhenjiang Canal section are all floated down from the upper reaches of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan. Rafts are tied up upstream, float here to form, and then transport them. Later, the policy required the protection of natural forests, and the raft stations were all cancelled.

1982, Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province, raft station next to Yangtze River .
These are historical processes.
shooter: Now, how do you evaluate the images taken on two cyclings?
Liu Shizhao: These images, the disappearing images, have recorded the history and can be kept. There may be many historical details that future generations do not know.
If I (1981) don’t walk there, I don’t know. I walked there and saw it and took a photo to know the story of the past. This image is very precious and can be preserved as history.
Photographer: What are the plans currently?
Liu Shizhao: There are still many negatives taken before that have not been scanned and sorted out. At present, I will sort out the pictures taken before. I also hope to publish an album in the future.
