In the early morning of February 10, Beijing time, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced the list of new academicians.
The US Academy of Engineering is a top academic institution in the engineering community and one of the four major academic institutions in the United States (the other three are NAS of the National Academy of Sciences, NAM of the National Academy of Medicine and NSF of the National Science Foundation).
Election as a member of the National Academy of Engineering is one of the highest professional honors of experts in the field of engineering, which recognizes the candidates’ “significant contributions to engineering research, practice, education, etc.”, “pioneering work in emerging technologies and in traditional engineering” and “innovative contributions to development/implementation of engineering education”. The annual new member vote will take place in December and the final vote for membership will take place in January.
022 American Academy of Engineering includes 111 people and 22 foreign academicians. NAE Chairman John Anderson announced today that the total number of U.S. members has reached 2,388 after the new additions in the period and 310 international members. The qualifications of this new academician will officially take effect at the annual meeting of the US Academy of Engineering on October 2, 2022.
It is worth noting that Elon Musk is on the list of new academicians.

Some people think Musk deserves his name as an academician of the Academy of Engineering, while others question it.
Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa in June 1971. He entered Queen's College in Canada in 1990 and later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. He received a bachelor's degree in physics in 1995. Musk was admitted to the Stanford University doctoral program in materials science, but he chose to drop out after only two days of admission and started a business in Silicon Valley.
Currently, Musk owns titles including but not limited to: SpaceX founder, CEO, chief engineer; Tesla CEO and chief designer; Boring Company founder; Neuralink and OpenAI co-founder. His current net worth is approximately US$241 billion (mainly in Tesla shares) and he is the richest person in the world.
Musk was selected as a member of the US Academy of Engineering because he made breakthroughs in the design, engineering, manufacturing and operation of reusable launch vehicles, sustainable transportation and energy systems.
In addition, Chinese representatives such as Zhang Hongjiang, Chairman of Beijing Zhiyuan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, were also selected as foreign academicians.
Reasons for election : Outstanding technical contribution and leadership in the field of multimedia computing
Chairman of Beijing Zhiyuan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, former Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Asia Pacific R&D Group, and Partner of Beijing Source Code Capital Investment. He served as CEO of Kingsoft Software, CTO of Microsoft Asia Pacific R&D Group, Dean of Microsoft Asia Engineering, Vice President of Microsoft Research Institute, and became Microsoft's first "outstanding scientists". Two academicians of the International Association of Computers (ACM) and the Association of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE), have won the 2010 IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award and the 2012 ACM Multimedia Outstanding Technical Achievement Award, and the 2008 American Outstanding Asian Engineer Award. He has published nearly 400 academic papers and compiled many academic monographs. He was selected as the "2020 Global H-index Scientists in Computer Science and Electronics" released by Guide2research and ranked first among mainland Chinese scholars.

Cao, Jian

Reason for election : Created a flexible sheet forming system, which is leading in the manufacturing industry. Professor
Cao Jian’s main research interests include innovative manufacturing processes and systems, especially in the fields of deformation-based processes and laser processes. Her work has made a fundamental contribution to characterizing the effect of material structures on the forming behavior of metals and woven composites. Her research integrates analytical and numerical simulation methods, control and sensors, and design methods to advance the manufacturing process.
Fang Daining (foreign academician)
Position : Honorary Dean and Chief Scientist of the Institute of Advanced Structural Technology of Beijing Institute of Technology
Reason for election : Contribution to the mechanics and light multifunctional structure of ferroelectric/ferromagnetic materials under extreme conditions.
Professor Fang Daining received his undergraduate and master's degrees from Nanjing University of Technology in 1982 and 1986, and his doctorate degree from Israel Institute of Technology in 1993. In 2013, Fang Daining was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Professor Fang Daining mainly engages in the research on advanced materials and structural mechanics theory, calculation and experimental methods. The macro-micro deformation and fracture theory of ferroelectric/ferromagnetic materials has been expanded and has been applied in finite element analysis and device design. Advanced materials and structural forces, electromagnetic and thermal multi-field multi-scale computational mechanics and design and preparation methods have been developed. The research results have been applied in high-end equipment structures such as the first international additive manufacturing satellite and the first domestic rail transit equipment main bearing special-shaped composite material suspension frame structure. Advanced materials multi-field multi-axis loading and testing technology and experimental methods have been developed, and a series of material performance testing technologies in thermal/force/oxygen coupling environments have been broken through. A series of ultra-high temperature testing instruments have been independently developed, filling the domestic gap, becoming one of the main platforms for ultra-high temperature mechanical performance testing in my country, supporting the development of major national defense equipment such as aerospace return capsules and key missiles.
Liu, Bin (foreign academician)
Position : Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore
Reason for election : Let organic electronic materials enter the water medium, opening up a new direction in biomedical, environmental monitoring, sensors and electronic devices.
Liu Bin graduated from Nanjing University with a bachelor’s and master’s degree, and later received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the National University of Singapore. He joined the National University of Singapore in 2005 as an assistant professor and was promoted to professor in 2016. Currently, he is a member of the Singapore Academy of Engineering, an academician of the National Academy of Sciences, an academician of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials Sciences and an academician of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Professor Liu Bin is a leader in the field of organic functional materials, and her contributions to polymer chemistry and organic nanomaterials in biomedical research, environmental monitoring and energy equipment are widely recognized.

Taiyin Yang received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Taiwan University and a doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Southern California.
