You should have discovered it when buying new phones in recent years. The once essential 3.5mm headphone interface (round-round interface) has become increasingly rare since the cancellation of iPhone 7. Manufacturers continue to follow up on this design, leaving only the Type-C interface (iPhone only has a lighting interface).
Everyone has different opinions on this. Some people say that it is for waterproofing and expanding battery capacity, while others say that it is for improving sound quality.
So what are the advantages and disadvantages of replacing the 3.5mm headphone interface with Type-C (lighting) interface?
First of all, the 3.5mm headphone interface transmits analog signals, while the Type-C interface can transmit digital signals.
- Advantages:
Theoretically, in terms of "fidelity", digital signal transmission is stronger than analog signals, that is, the Type-C interface can indeed bring about improvement in sound quality (although it may have some marketing components);
noise reduction is also a great benefit of digital audio, because the signal can be processed inside the headset;
saves space: canceling the 3.5mm interface is convenient for reducing the thickness of the device or expanding the battery capacity (although I personally think it is not very necessary).
- Disadvantages:
First of all, it is inconvenient to use: it is impossible to charge while listening to songs, bringing a poor user experience;
And because of the decoding and conversion, the power consumption of the Type-C interface is much higher;
and the service life reduction brought by the shared charging port.
So, in my opinion, canceling the 3.5mm charging port is a design that is convenient for manufacturers and troublesome for users. Even though cutting off the 3.5mm headphone jack may save space for mobile phone manufacturers to optimize other aspects, in terms of current situations and experience, I prefer to retain the use of this headphone jack (some manufacturers have recently launched some models with 3.5mm interfaces). Compared to improving performance, I prefer this design to allow users to become interested in some Bluetooth headsets and products.
From the experience of using headphones, I personally prefer some models that retain 3.5mm headphone jacks. After all, the advantages obtained by canceling the 3.5mm headphone jack may not be obvious enough in more cases in the experience. Even if you pursue sound quality, you can achieve the effect through the "little tail" (dac decoder).
