Some time ago, Huawei fought a "technical war" with the United States! The United States actually used its national power to ban Huawei in many aspects. But it’s still good, and there are still many companies that express their support for Huawei! For example, TSMC.
Today, media broke the news: TSMC Chairman Liu Deyin said when meeting with the media after the regular meeting of shareholders that TSMC will continue to ship for Huawei.
Previously, it was reported that Huawei's new generation Kirin chip will be named Kirin 985 and will be manufactured using TSMC's second-generation 7nm EUV extreme ultraviolet lithography process.
He also revealed that TSMC shipped Huawei in the second half of this year will be better than in the second half of last year, mainly because the world's most advanced new products require 7nm process chips.
In fact, after TSMC stated that it would support Huawei. After TSMC issued a statement of continuous supply, the US Department of Commerce immediately sent people to Taiwan to investigate, trying to find out whether TSMC shipped Huawei violated US regulations, but the investigation result disappointed the United States and had to leave in disappointment.
In addition to TSMC, today the founder of ARM also expressed his views on the "Huawei Incident". He said: Once tariffs are imposed, the procurement costs of equipment operators will increase, which is not conducive to competition among non-US enterprises. Even American equipment operators are involved because many components in semiconductor equipment need to be purchased from China. In fact, there is no problem with this view, because now it is global economic integration , realizing the situation of having me in you and I in you. It seems that you banned me, but in fact it has caused harm to yourself!
So the question is, why doesn’t Huawei produce its own chips? Although TSMC supports Huawei on the surface, to put it bluntly, it was the decision that TSMC made after all after much consideration. Because of business, TSMC does not need to break up with Huawei.
1. The cost is too high
Now it costs about US$10 billion to invest in a 12-inch wafer factory. If you want to generate a scale effect, you may need to build more, but a wafer factory alone is not enough. The equipment for making chips has not been included, such as lithography machine , etc. In a word, the cost is too high and you have to bear the risk!
2. Specialize in
Just like Alibaba adheres to, this society is divided into division of labor, don’t always think about doing everything. If you finish everything. Then what are others doing? Besides, you don’t have the ability to finish it yourself. Therefore, we must understand cooperation, so that cooperation can win-win results!
3. TSMC is the most advanced manufacturing process among these companies. Because of its advanced manufacturing process, many chip giants are rushing to get it to manufacture chips. In other words, TSMC is the leader in this field!
So, based on the above, Huawei is only responsible for R&D and handing over the production of chips to TSMC. This is the wisest way!
Of course, with Huawei's strength in the future, it is not ruled out that it will build its own chip manufacturing factory or acquire a related chip company. After all, Huawei's technology and ability to control the supply chain can be said to be first-class in the business world!
