This work is the first feature-length animated film of Shinkai Makoto and was released in November 2004. is Shinkai's third work after "She and Her Cat" and "Speaking of the Stars". story tells the story of after the Second World War, Japan was divided into two regions, north and south, due to its different ideas about the war. Under Union's rule, Hokkaido was built in a mysterious "giant tower" and some kind of plan was secretly carried out. In the , Honshu, Japan, occupied by the US military, no one knows the true purpose of the tower. Looking from the middle of the strait, you can see the "giant tower" there more clearly. The young men of Aomori Prefecture, Fujisawa Hiroki and Shirakawa Takukawa, who have always had unknown longing and awe of the "giant tower", have always hoped to fly to the "giant tower" with their own strength, so they used the scrap left by the army to assemble a small plane in the ruins of the post-war in the mountains. At the same time, the one who is interested in the "Giant Tower" is also the girl Zawasayuri, who is the same age as them. Hiroki is determined to save Sayuri from his eternal sleep, and ask Takuya, who works in the government building, to help. They gradually discovered that there are many hidden secrets between Sayuri and the ‘Giant Tower’, and as long as they get close to these secrets, both will be repulsive.
