New renovation of old houses is a topic that is always discussed and new. In the process of design and transformation, how to make the charm of old times coexist with the space suitable for modern life can be said to be the original intention of most transformation projects.
Today, we see three cases of transformation from old hospitals and pharmacies into cafes. Some of the carefulness and attentiveness in transformation make us imagine that a hundred years ago, people who hurriedly stepped into the hospital and pharmacy were seeking a physical peace; a hundred years later, we hurriedly stepped into the cafe were seeking a spiritual settlement: a cup of coffee and a work of art brought us some spiritual healing.
It can be said that the most moving part of the new construction of the old house is not the revitalization of functions and the retention of space, but the respect for history and careful tracing and preservation of various details left over from time. The warmth and touching brought by these nostalgia inadvertently may be the true mission that these renovated buildings have been silently carrying for a hundred years.
Taipei, Taiwan, Baoan 8si
The historic building "Shuntian Surgery Hospital" is located in the Dadaocheng area of Taipei. It was founded during the Japanese administration. Its founder Xie Tangshan is the first Taiwanese indigenous surgeon to complete Western medical education. This hospital has also left a good story in the modern history of Taiwan.

The exterior of the entire building is an elegant three-story villa with four-story space inside. The complete Baroque style exterior wall is also hung with the sign of "Shuntian Surgery Hospital". Between the towering Western pillars, there are gentle window lattices, which contain a hint of stability.

In 2013, it took five years to repair and the building was renovated into a cafe and art space. The original hospital elements are presented in an interesting way, recreating the "outpatient" scene. The most impressive thing is a white bone doctor in a white robe placed in a corner. When you first arrive, watching him stand quietly in a corner of the patio will make people feel a little scared; however, after looking at him for a long time, he feels like he is guarding something, quietly staring at the people coming and going, like the guardian of this space. In addition, there were also "doctors" who worked so hard that only bones were left. On the wall were hung with doctors' robes, nurses' clothes and stethoscopes, suggesting their former purpose.

The cafe itself is a three-story building. The first floor was originally a clinic in a surgical hospital. After the renovation, it was decorated in a wooden style and entered by the coffee shop. The quiet air is filled with the aroma of cooking coffee.

The second and third floors were originally the doctor's private residence, and are now transformed into an art space. Some of the spaces display the antique "vacuum tube soundtrack", which is like returning to the mid-twentieth century; the seats from Bali, full of primitive and magnificent atmosphere are the private collection of the cafe manager; the bookcases hidden under the steel beams and columns, as well as the display spaces on the walls and cabinets are filled with Taiwanese cultural and creative products and exhibition paintings that are collaborated with irregular cooperation.

The quietest space in the entire building is the third floor exhibition space, and the small theater with seats is presented at the stairs, which can be rented for various art and cultural sharing activities. When
was built, the architect deliberately opened the middle of the first and second floors, imitating the high visual effect of the leap layer, which not only makes the space more integrated, but also allows the artistic and literary space atmosphere on the second floor to quietly mix into the coffee aroma of the first floor for guests in the elegant seat to sip it quietly. In the deeper inside, you will find the structure of the security guard, which is a unique long "street house" in the local area. Because the house is too long from the front and back, a patio would be built in the center of the house during ancient times to facilitate air circulation and lighting. The flow of time and space, the patio that used to carry flowing air has now been transformed into a transparent elevator to transport visitors to and from all floors.

Coffee itself is also an important soul of security guards. The cafe of Baoan Basi focuses on siphon coffee, with the purpose of retaining the most original delicacies. The barista behind the bar carefully selected coffee beans for the guests and deliberately used a non-open flame heating stove to boil hot water; in addition to making coffee, it also contained a tenderness that protected the ancient monuments in the branches, and also refreshed the impression and experience of coffee by first visiting customers.
Berlin, Germany, CAFÉ ORA
As one of the oldest pharmacy buildings in Berlin, the original pharmacy "Oranien-Apotheke" is now transformed into a cafe "CAFÉ ORA" by filmmaker Lukas Schmid and photographer Christoph Mack.

In order to maintain the elegance and charm of the nineteenth century, the original pharmacy name on the exterior wall is still very obvious. On the contrary, the Xinsheng Cafe's signature is not eye-catching, and you can only pass through a dark and small doorway when you enter the interior.

In the spacious space of the old pharmacy, the dark green leather soft chairs are the main theme, paired with a black wooden table, a decorated bench and a small swivel chair bench bench benches beside the bar, injecting a new atmosphere into the old space. The wooden cabinets from the old era, hundreds of glass and enamel medicine jars, dark wood medicine counters, secret knowledge of pharmacy research, as well as experimental test tubes and other equipment, were all placed in place intact. The medicine counter has now been changed to a coffee bar, and tables and chairs are added around it casually, making it suitable for customers who go alone and want to greet and chat with the clerk. The glass medicine jar displayed on

contains the now lost Latin text, compared with the various alcoholic drinks and wine vessels placed below. Whether it is medicine or wine, it has a healing effect for different people. This feeling is quite interesting; countless drawers and medicine cabinets are placed in the other corner, and the wooden cabinets exude a calm and stable effect like a calming effect.
In addition to these exquisite classical lamps, furniture and decorations, there are also some traditional beakers and kettles here. The details of the space that have been preserved for a hundred years are still delicately inherited and continue to this day with a new attitude, like an exquisite museum, which makes people obsessed.

Nights here is also a good party choice. It is a cafe during the day, and at night it becomes a tavern, with beer, cocktails and neon lights, flashing and flowing in the overlapping pharmacies and figures.
Taiwan Yilan , Hesheng Taiping
The former "Taiping Hospital" located on Zhongshan Road, Yilan is an old building built in 1930. It was opened as a hospital by former Yilan Mayor Chen Jinbo in 1955. After Mr. Chen passed away, the hospital also stopped operating.
In 2013, the owner of Hesheng 66, a well-known homestay brand in Yilan, rented the front half of the house and transformed it into a cafe and art space "Hesheng Taiping". In order to abide by the agreement with the property owner, the building tried its best to preserve the stories and memories of the old house while renovating it. The original spatial layout and hospital elements, wooden stair handrails, and retro-style floor tiles give people the illusion of traveling through time tunnels.

Entering the internal space, the first thing you see is the wooden compartment, which immediately makes people regain the impression of the clinic from the old era. The counter at the door is an old registration desk, and the bar area is an old injection room. It also has an antique telephone in conjunction with the nostalgic atmosphere.

The first floor is a coffee space, where customers can enjoy leisure time in the nostalgic clinic layout. The second floor is a private room with a Japanese style. The raised room is the living room of the old owner. It is divided into three private rooms through the sliding door area. The empty window lattices increase the penetration and extension of the space. In addition, the second floor also retains a story space, displaying photos and stories of Mr. Chen Jinbo, and telling the past and present of Hesheng Taiping.

The first and second floors exhibited many movie and TV series posters at the same time. These works are works by the well-known photographer Guo Zhengzhang, who is also one of the founders of "Hesheng Taiping". In the original kitchen space, the washbasin and stove at that time were completely preserved, and combined with cultural and creative works, it became a small exhibition room.
