American smart home fitness company Peloton said on Wednesday that it was recalling all treadmill products.
Last month, a 6-year-old child died after being rolled under a Peloton treadmill while the machine was running. There have been dozens of other injuries. Federal regulators pressured Peloton to recall treadmills sold.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a joint statement with Peloton on Wednesday, advising customers to "immediately stop" using Tread and Tread+ treadmills and contact Peloton for a full refund or other "compensation."
This recall is voluntary and users can stop using these machines or choose other solutions. Contact Peloton before November 6th to request a full refund. Treadmills returned after that date will only receive a partial refund.
According to an announcement on the CPSC official website, Peloton’s Tread+ treadmill has received 72 reports of accidents, including adults, children, pets and other objects being involved under the machine. Twenty-nine of the reports involved injuries to children, such as broken bones and serious cuts.
About 125,000 Peloton Tread+ units will be recalled this time. This product sells for $4,295. Users who don't need to return the treadmill can move the treadmill to a room out of reach of children and pets, and Peloton offers free reinstallation.
Including Canada, about 6,000 Peloton Tread units are recalled. This product sells for $2,495. According to the recall statement, there have been more than a dozen reports of the Tread's touchscreen coming loose, but not completely falling off, and no injuries have been reported. Peloton says users who don't need to return their Tread can wait for free inspections and repairs.
Peloton CEO John Foley said in a press release: "The decision to recall these two products is the right one for Peloton members and their families. I want to clarify that when the CPSC asked us to recall the Tread+ , our initial response was wrong. We should have engaged with them more effectively from the beginning."
Peloton. It also stated that it has suspended sales of Tread+ and that the company is "conducting software upgrades to the product, automatically locking the device after each use, and preventing unauthorized access through a 4-digit password."
As of Thursday's close after the news was announced, Peloton Shares of fell 15% to $82.77 per share.
This is Peloton’s second major recall . The company issued a voluntary recall of 27,000 indoor bicycles in October 2020, when users reported problems with the equipment pausing midway.
