Xinhua News Agency quoted Taiwan's Yilan County fire department as saying that the accident occurred at around 4 pm. There were 45 people in the car including the driver and passengers. Most of the passengers were residents of New Taipei City who went to Hualien for a trip and returned in the afternoon. The fire department stated that 9 people were confirmed to be seriously injured and 30 people were slightly injured. The injured have been sent to nearby hospitals for treatment. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
